New $100 HIDs

I have 4 of the 4" from the Kragen/Shucks people, and I'm quite pleased. I have them mounted on my roof basket on the TJ, and I don't think I would have been happy with any other beam pattern. The lights do a great job. I may have to get a set of those hard covers though, although I have a set of 6" KC soft covers on them for street use.

I had a customer bring me 2 of those HID "X" lights. I think they are plastic junk. For $20.00 more he could have used an LED light that only draws .75 amps, 900 lumens and is made out of Aluminum not Plastic!

Yeah...there is no way those two lights are comparable. HOWEVER, the VisonX 4" light puts out 720 lumens, not 72. Probably just a mis-type, but for the sake of keeping things real. Also, the 4" light only draws 1 amp. The latter is indeed a better quality unit in every sense, but dollar for dollar, the HID still wins.

Yup.
You need the 12" Xmitter for around 3900 lumens.

No LED is going to beat the price/light output of HID. LED has advantages but price is not one of them for offroad lights.

Mine did come with clear covers, but that doesn't cut it for Ca. vehicle codes on off road lights. I have the clear covers underneath the KC softies.

By the time I've worn out my "junk" HID's, I'm hoping that the next generation of LED lights will have become more affordable.
This light compares evenly with the HID lights but is quite expensive:

Actually the VisionX Patriot is the latest version of LED design from VisionX. I think that is a pretty slick design. Don't know if your wallet can stand it though!
 
I'm actually talking about the Vision X Solstice.
I'm not saying that they are Just as bright as an HID. For the price point, you could of had a better product.

You have to consider placement and other factors going into the lighting equation. I'm not going to start the L.E.D. vs. H.I.D. debate. I run both. I actually like the Lightforce H.I.D.'s best of all. For low and slow I recommend the L.E.D. to our customers. For high placement and/or high speed, H.I.D. .

Also, you have to consider light spectrum,eye fatigue, extended use, degree of abuse,etc...
 
I think a combination of HID and LED is the best solution.

LED is great for close in fill lighting, a couple hundred feet. HID is needed to really reach out and see distance.

The best thing about LED is it is instant on and dimable. So if you just need to flash someone LED is the ticket. And if you want some fill lighting and don't want to blind yourself or others LED is perfect.
