New alternative to Pelican cases

capturecolorado

Hooray bikes!
While at Home Depot yesterday, I noticed a new model line of tool boxes/cases from Rigid, they are extremely durable looking, heavily reinforced lids, thick sides, even a gasket on the lid! Not just that, but they have burly latches and are designed to be interlocking when stacked. I was looking at them, and I could see this being redesigned to use the interlocking clamps as a mounting method into or onto your vehicle, so no straps needed (maybe)!

I also looked at this, a Husky job box with durable hinge, latch, and similarly heavy reinforcement of the lid and sides, so you can use this to support additional loads. FWIW, the height of this, and the height of the 3700 cu/in Rigid box are approximately the same height (within about 1/4")--so you can stack one next to the other for various load carrying requirements.

All of this is just my continued effort in hunting for a more viable solution for cargo management on my flatbed, without forking over the money to buy Pelican cases.

Thanks for posting! Nice alternative for storage for sure. I've also been comparing cases over the years, I must admit though I'm hesitant to trust my $$$ camera gear to anything other than a pelican case off road or in any travel situation. But as a kitchen box or for general gear haulage where absolute water and dust protection are not of paramount importance I can see using the Husky for sure. You probably can't drive a Hummer over it though

Look similar to the Dewalt Tough System Cases. Thread on those here.

I thought I remember a thread about one of these (or another like them) also being available at Costco lately, but can't find the thread.

I just bought one. Seems like it could be used for recovery gear, as a first aid box, or tool box. Tool box for now for me. This video review says they are not waterproof although several others said the seal worked fine.

These fit nicely behind the seats in my FJ. I will likely get a 2nd one for my recovery gear. My current storage solution for that gear does not fit there. I can also see it being used as a food box as others have suggested. Probably not tall enough for a chuckbox. At least not for the stuff I carry. Great find.

I have the Rigid one's. I bought 3 of them. Having a 2 DR jeep they are perfect. One is for parts for the jeep , the other for camping gear and the small one for food and cooking

I use the 3 different sized ridged boxes for work & picked up another as a chuck box, fits great in the fj80 & keeps the dust/dirt/rain out which is solid. Only downside is if the wife needs something quick on the side of the trail it's a pain to access when stacked & strapped.
Our layout, top has utensils. middle, plates etc. bottom, food.

I've been using the middle and large size Ridged boxes most of this year. The best thing about them is the price and that they all lock together. Admittedly, I don't strap them to the top of my rig - they live in the back and hold galley/tent stuff plus my spares and tools. Not perfect, but for the money I have no complaints.

I did think the DeWalt boxes looked a bit better made, but not significantly better and they were more expensive. Since I was new to the whole box thing, I went with these as an experiment and I've been please with them. So a thumb's up from me.

I stopped and looked at the Rigid boxes yesterday and they are pretty decent, but agree that they are not real space efficient. Lots of ribs and lips and tricks to stiffen the plastic structure, and that leaves a lot of wasted nooks and crannies. The bigger boxes in the line are better, but they will get real heavy when loaded. The Home Depot I went to did not have any of the Dewalt boxes, so they may be dropping the line.

For tool storage in the garage, I started using Stanley Fat Max boxes, which are now labeled as Bosch boxes. They come in two sizes (~22" and ~28") and they interlock when you stack them. The smaller of the two is the same length as a heavy duty plastic milk crate so they are almost modular in the back of the truck. Gasketed lid and pretty much water proof.
