New (but not really) guy! Gen 2.5 Montero

Hey guys! I’m basically back new again. It’s beem about 6 years since my last Montero, and after some major life changes I’m back into it all!

Long story short: My family is a crazy Montero family. We’ve owned 5, and across all generations.

I’m a whiz with Gen 2 3.0L models, so I’m more than willing to help people with them.

My return brings me with my unicorn model, and dream truck that I managed to snag for a steal, and I’ll need some help remembering the ins and outs of these trucks.

I managed to get a hold of a Gen 2.5 SR with the winter package in white yesterday, and I’ll be making my list of things needed to be done here soon I’ll need some advice on. Cheers fellas! And happy trails!

Ah! Okay. Figured it out. So with the pictures I can drop some details.

Mechanically, the truck is fantastic. I’ve had trucks with half the miles sounding way worse that this. No valve ticks, squeals, or anything. The head gasket and valve cover gaskets were replaced along with the alternator, radiator hoses and whatnot. The body is rust, scratch, and dent free!

The ugly:
Interior is definitely 21 years old of daily driver. Butt gash I’m the driver seat, two exterior door handles are busted ... standard Montero issues. My only concern is either the job was messy replacing the valve cover gaskets and they dumped a bunch of oil down the side of the block, or they did a crappy job doing it, because there’s a TON of oil burning off. I’ll have to get the motor steam cleaned to give myself a baseline. The air compressor is flawless. Drivetrain locks right in when it’s supposed to. And even one of the fog lights still work! The windshield is cracked, probably from drastic hot/cold changes from what it looks like, but I live in Florida and windshields are free with insurance. The moon roof is inop right now as well due to a suspected switch issue (typical Montero stuff), but to counter that ... 3/4 of the in door toolbox is still there. Which impressed me.

So overall, little bit of project work ahead of me, but for a road trip and $1600 I think I came out on top. Looking forward to building this one up and keeping it for the long haul. Plan on milking this baby all the way to 1,000,000 miles.

Did previous owner do the rear cam seals?
also if you dont plan on using that tow hitch i'll buy it

I’m PROOOOOBABLY gonna keep that tow hitch for the same reason you want it. Always comes in handy to haul a little trailer.

Did a little more cleaning up of the motor compartment today to find where the oil leak was.

Best news ever. It was just filthy. Washed about an 1/8 inch of just grime off the motor and couldn’t find evidence of a leak. Think it was just the filth burning. So WOO HOO!

Also. Can you tell I like Mitsubishi? The obsession is real.

Got new tires. So of course I had to go out and take pictures!

For reference, the tires are BF Goodrich A/T KO2s in 31x10.50R15.
