New Camper shell presents problem

I picked up a used snugtop Hi rise for my 02 Tacoma xtracab. the shell is very nice but I am now presented with a problem. I would really like to haul my canoe and possibly other gear on the truck. I would need to put a roofrack system on the shell but this would put me right on the edge of my height limit at the parking gararge.

So here is what I decided to do. I want to put a gear basket on my cab, and then put some cross bars on the shell. this would allow me to carry water, fuel, gear in the basket on the cab and if I throw the canoe on it will be level with new shell by having the basket on the cab.

My question is has anyone else mounted a roofrack system on their tacoma like this. I have been doing some reading and compaines like Thule and Yakima carry kits for the truck but they make it sound like you have to mount to the internal rain gutter, my issue is that the rear doors are solid, they don't open.

has anyone put a gear basket on the cab of their tacoma, if so how...

thanks

The Expeditions West Tacoma (was a Double Cab) is the only one I remember offhand.

You may need to mount a pair of bars in the door opening on your extra cab for strength and use that with a stretch kit and 3rd bar to get the length you want. To complicate that, your roof is "higher" in the back, so it will all not be setting on the same plane.

Keep us posted if you come up with a solution...

Wouldn't it be simpler to put a set of bolt on rails onto the shell (Yakima calls them the "side loaders") then you can put on your rack only when carrying the canoe - otherwise the rack goes inside the truck or in storage.
