New Family/Expedition GPS

I used to have a very basic GPS that took me to addresses I hadn’t been before. Worked for that but wouldn’t accept coordinates, geocaches, waypoints, tracks, routes, map updates. It also always stayed on roads so worthless on jeep trails. That thing finally broke.

I’d like to get something that does all that while my wife could still use it for basic GPS navigation. Would an iPad do everything I want even out of cell range? Seems to be where iPhones lose their usefulness.

Looks like most Garvin trail models like an etrex or Oregon would work for regular car nav if I buy a navigator map set. Any reviews on this option?

Also any equivalent to the Australian Hema Navigator for the US?

I went for the iPad, jailbroken with a bluetooth GPS if you go the non 3G route but the GPS in the 3G works perfect as well. Allows for more use than just GPS. great for music, PDF (shop manuals, reference material), Photos and editing, email, web browsing ...

For me it was the perfect package. I know its not perfect but a lot less clutter in the front seat and with all the navigation apps out there can keep a riding partner busy on those long stretch.
