Dumped the 400t
I wont enumerate all the issues I had with the 400t, but suffice it to say that I went against my principals, took it back to REI, got a proven winner in ANOTHER 60CSx and pocketed the $322.00 price difference at the same time.
I had it for sale here on ExPo to gauge interest but came to the conclusion that I did not want to pass on a problem, so I used REI's excellent return policy and ditched it.
While it has INCREDIBLE accuracy and wondrous screen, the interface simply sucks - especially for one handed operation. The other issues I had were random shut downs. With the long sat. acquisition times this became a problem in the woods. Sometimes it would offer a 'low battery' warning despite the fact I had just loaded freshly charged batteries in it. It would continue to run, so the warning was a glitch.
The website said the Colorado series is in constant development and would have new updates every few weeks. There has been only one since January along side a BETA that actually did more harm than good.
Then there is the City Navigator problem. I have effectively thrown the $120 away since it only comes with ONE license. Returning the 400t consumed that one and I am staring at a program I payed for and cannot use because Garmin cannot negotiate a better contract with NT for use of their maps. Feeling my frustration?
The real clincher was my call to Garmin to inquire about the future of this unit. The Garmin rep gave me this long winded story about it being so far ahead of the crowd that I should expect some growing pains. In a $600 unit??? PLEASE! He could have cared less about my problems and was not interested in easing my concerns. I was unusually polite too...:wavey:
I do not know what has happened to Garmin, but they are slipping in many peoples eyes. I fly and many of my mentors have trusted Garmin equipment for a long time. But their new direction and piss poor customer service has cemented the fact that the 60CSx is the last Garmin thing I will own until they demonstrate a commitment to EARNING my dollars again, rather than patting the pin heads in R&D on the back for poor ideas. Others I know are saying the same thing. Telling me that the 400t is a GREAT unit does not make it so.:littlefriend:
I have become lazy and trust the GPS pretty much exclusively for outback navigation. I would never feel comfortable with a Colorado 400t for anything more than GeoCashing in a large group of other GPS's.:088:
