New Guy Trailer Build Thread

Thanks, but that was the first place I checked after the Orschelns ubolts didn't work. :( I'm going to call and check with the place I got the stabilizrs from to see what they have. Needatrailer.com is their direct website but does link them back to Ebay. The other option is to see if I can remove a leaf from the springs since they are more then stiff enough now.

Wow, this build is a-mazing. I don't know if I like the Jeep or trailer more... Besides the ginormous tires, the retro look your Jeep has going on looks like it's straight out of the 90's. I love it! Lots of fond memories from that time period for me. Can't wait to see the finished trailer.

Thanks a lot Jerry. :ylsmoke:

Quick update on the u-bolts, NOBODY makes that size! I did stop at a somewhat local truck accessory place (Big Rig Truck Accessories) that had a u-bolt install kit for around $8, so I picked that up and determined that the smallest lowest leaf can be removed to make it work. They also had some neat little ratchet style rope pulleys that would work perfect for hanging clothes or towels on. For less then $7, I couldn't go wrong getting a couple of them. I'll get some pictures posted later after I get out to the garage to do a little more work. Kid activities are going to keep me from getting too much done, but a little is better then nothing.

Rope ratchets are awesome, I have a couple,
Replace the rope with a longer piece and I used cable crimp clamps
to finish it off.

That's a great idea. I'm need to figure out where I'm going to to use them right now. :p

Finished up the Jerry Can holder for where the water is going to be. A CJ7 footmans loop was welded in so I can double back the strap to hold it in place.

After searching through some cans of odds and ends, I found 4 of these and decided to use them for stringing up clothes lines, trash bags, and a hammock.

First thing was to center them on the bend of the tube drill them out so they can get inserted in to the cage.

Just one of the many uses....

I had a change of plans on which way to run the RTT. Instead of having it pivot towards the passenger side, I thought it would be cool to have it pivot towards the rear which will make the Kukenam Annex Accessory completely enclose the back of the trailer. According to my measurements, this is how far it should stick out from the back if I center it on the cage...

and to the side....

Looking at the Fed Ex tracking website, June 21st is when it is supposed to be here!!!!! I've got a lot of painting to do before then but should have it all of that done since all of the welding should be done unless I come up with some other little things to add.

I really like all the little fab details you are adding...you have fantastic skills, and the build is extremely unique.

Good luck!

Thank you. :)

I found some Hi Lift Jack brackets, cut them down, and welded them in to a spot that look like it was made to be there.

Since the propane bottle is taller then the box, it has to be recessed in the floor.

Because space is limited, some modifications had to be made to the tongue. I was sure to use a heavier material to patch it, but being that the tongue is 1/4' I don't see how the strength would be compromised, especially gusseting the whole side together with the propane tank holder.

I have to get more material to finish it and grind a little more for it to sit flush on the bottom.

I've seen some threads on here about lid gasket material but would like to hear the consensus of what works best. Any experience or links to share? :)

After a day of not much going right yesterday, I was able to get some paint on it in anticipation of the RTT showing up in 24 hours. It's just too bad the trailer won;t be completely done in time to mount it. :( Part of things not going right where based off the zero experience of building one of these before, but I wanted to point it out so others don't make the same mistake. When the axle was purchased, I simply moved the new spring perches to the desired located and matched the degree of what was on it. After having issues finding long enough u-bolts and having the employee at Big Rig Truck Accessories mention something about the crown of the axle, it became obvious that I never took into account that the springs and axle were set up for spring under, One peek down the tube confirmed that, soooooooo a little grinding on the old perches after pulling the axle back out, I simply located them opposite of what I had welded on before, welded those on, and painted them up since it was convenient. Problem solved! Not really, when the axle was put back under it and bolted up, I found out the perches on the bottom are too wide for the u-bolts to be lined up right since the weld is in the way. Because it was late and I wanted to get inside, they were snugged up and left for when I have more time to pull it back out and grind the lower ones off then. I can hardly wait! The other problem I had was the paintable rubberized undercoating that I decided to use on the inner fenders apparently was too old, so water was bubbling and separating out of it and dripping all over the floor. That's something new to me. Figuring I would see how it dried today, 4 more cans were bought to use so it could be built up more then. After putting another coat on, it's too bad the weather went to crap and basically made it so the stuff wouldn't dry. We'll see how that turns out by tomorrow, but I won't be too happy if that has to be stripped off and redone. any way, some pics of progress....

All of the top, back, and most of the passenger side done...

It's pretty nice not having to use a jack to take the tires off. :ylsmoke: The inner frame was sprayed with the undercoating too but will be top coated with the hammered paint if it ever dries. I used some seam sealer that was bought for the FC, but since that has been put on hold, it got used before the shelf life expired...

Hopefully that will be dry enough to paint tomorrow too.

I'll be the first guy to say I love stickers.

Here is a better look at it with the wheels and tires on...

Tomorrow the tent arrives, but the goal is to finish as much paint as possible. Once that is done, then the box can be mounted, and the floor that was dropped off tonight can be fitted, then traced where the propane bottle is recessed. Having the floor of the floor propane holder not done, it will be the easiest way by far to get the opening dead on. Once marked I will finish fabbing that up and finish up the paint too, that is after I pick up another 5-6 cans to go along with the 7 already used.

With you rear stabiliers so close to the tailgate don't forget that your tent will be past the balance point of them. You may have to add some beefy braces under the outer corner of the tent for the annex rooms corners and tent support. Looking good! The rear annex will be a smart use of space.
