New here I’ve got a lifted Cherokee that I tow a Yuma pop-up behind the family loves it but I’d like to get farther out then the pop up will let me. I’ve been searching for awhile here looking at all the great trailer’s, I’m noticing a lot of old military trailers. They seem to be hard to find and when found need a lot of work, is there any other trailer that would be a good base to start with. What should I be looking for that would tell me that I’m looking at a good candidate?
In a general sense I would like it to be light and maneuverable to carry what I need and to have some sort of electric to run some DC items like fan, light coffee pot maybe, the type of stuff I can run in the pop-up. Got to convince the wife that giving up the camper isn’t going to be so bad.

Nothing like jumping in the deep end!:ylsmoke: Actually, if you can swing it, a good base would be a bare bones Adventure Trailer Chaser. The neat thing about those is that they are designed for an offroad environment but you can also add options as your budget allows. I'm saving for mine right now.

Seriously though, you can't go wrong w/ an AT and a roof top tent and if you're thinking of selling the yuma you could probably break even. (hehe, like we ever break even, gotta get the newest widgets)

I'm not sure a RTT will work there are three of us and a dog, I'm thinking one of the larger tents but something easy to set up and take down, I'm still searching on that.
Now as I drive I'm constently looking at every sort of little trailer I see and wonder if it would make a good off road trailer.
I do think If I can find a way to do this that will convince the wife I will be selling the yuma I figure I ought to be able to get between 2500-3k for it, so I would be willing to spend that to get me set up as best as possiable. I'll looki at a new AT trailer but I'm not really sure what I'm looking at yet.

I hear some scuttle around that some people "might" be looking to sell their AT's to get the new AT clam-shell trailer. That might be a good way to pick up a nice trailer for less money.

Not sure how big your dog is but my wife, 19 y/o daughter, 40lb Australian Cattle Dog and I spent 3 nights in our AT's RTT last weekend and still had plenty of room to keep our clothing duffel bags in there with us.

depending on where you are they are selling out the remaining ones imported here into the US for around 8K that is with electrical and water etc.. large tent and fly etc.. hard to beat deal at the price they are selling them for

nice extra room for the dog to sleep inside ? and you can get into the trailer without having to tilt the tent which is why I wanted something like this

Have you ever looked into trading your Yuma in for a Evolution Series Fleetwood Pop-up. I don't know how "deep" off the road you want to go, but keeping the ammenities this could be the ticket.

Thanks for all the great input folks. I’m still undecided as to what I’m going to do, I do like the Evo series of pop-up but part of the thought process is to lighten up on what I’m pulling, my Cherokee starts to get hot after about the third 8 mile hills that we have here in the northeast. I love all the specialty trailers for sure but I think my budget has got to be whatever I can get out of the Yuma. I like the idea of a RTT but I would still need someplace to hangout when it rains (it seems to rain every time I’m out) which is why I’m searching on family tents. I’m leaning more towards some sort of build but unsure what to look for in a trailer to determine whether it’s a good candidate for a build. Really all I can figure is it needs to have some sort of suspension and the ability to put a 15” wheel on it somehow, but other then that I’m not sure. I did find a old military style trailer yesterday but it was huge I think it was one that you would pull behind a 2 ½ ton, it said Wards on the ID plate and something like gross wt of 2900 lbs I think that it might be to big.
