I had a 1973 Gladiator (Kaiser or AMC?, right near the changeover) J-4700 for a while. I paid $300 for it, but had to tow it away on my car trailer. This was the one-ton model, long bed with a sturdier frame than the half-tons had. The frame was similar to the largest Jeep ever produced; The Five Quarter. This may have been the last year for the Gladiator, until the current tooting about a new one. I eventually canibalized parts of the drivetrain, like the Dana 60-2 rear axle to go in my son's 1973 Jeep C-104. This one had the thicker axle tubes for higher loading, and 35 spline axle shafts.
Anyway, a lot of conjecture above. Let's wait and see if Fiat has done their homework. 7500lb towing is pretty puny compared with any 2500/250 to 3500/350 produced during the last two decades.
