Where did I put my keys??
Hello All!
I have been going through the forum as much as I could as a non-member for the longest time, then thought to myself, why not? So, I joined up. Now I don't have a cool off road rig, or even a 4wd, but for the adventures I take, my van does the trick. I currently own a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan with the pushrod 3.3L and just a tad over 206,000km now. I have owned it since 15,000k and have had a love-hate relationship with it ever since.
My previous rig was a 2004 Dodge Dakota 4dr V8 2wd with a limited slip differential and for the most part it was an awesome truck, until someone tried to take out a house with it.... Anyway, back to the Caravan, since I needed another ride and with two small children I reluctantly decided on a minivan. Since owning it, I have converted it into a weekend getaway camper for the wife and I, as well as added many minor modifications to make family adventures much easier. I have camped in many parks and also done my fair share of stealth camping on our adventures but now it seems as the van won't be much of a camper with the kids getting older and wanting to come along (as well as a new addition to the family)
Here are some pics:

Here you can see I have added a third roof rail crossmember and mounted 4x100W Halogen lights to and installed a roof top carrier behind them.

From the Back is my Class 3 Hitch with 2" ball and Reece Hitch Step (Makes getting into the roof storage so much easier)

The seats are folded down into the floor as it gets a good cleaning for a camping trip.
you may not be able to see but in the lower front storage is a 200W power inverter as the can only came with 12v plugs

Here is the camper conversion. Air mattress for comfort, privacy curtains and a bug screen covering the rear hatch opening for air flow.

Add on awning (first attempt) and you can see the bug screen.

My love-hate relationship with this van is the fact that it can be converted and configured to meet whatever use I want but no matter what, at the end of the day it is still a minivan and not a cool VW conversion van.

I have taken it to far stretches of Northern Michigan and Ontario, and as far south as Florida. 99.9% of my travels are on roadways (paved/dirt) and the Caravan is excellent at hauling kids and cargo without any complaining from the power-train even with trailer in tow full of camping gear. The only thing that would be nice is some more ground clearance and 4x4 capability. (I'm guessing only a full size Suburban would be the next closest thing...except for the gas mileage)

I don't really see many minivan owners here so I hope my list of mods may help.
Here are some details on the modifications I have made:
Tires - Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread (Stock size)
Class 3 Trailer hitch with 7pin connector and trailer brake control
Reece Hitch Step
Sylvania Silverstar Ultra headlights
4x100WATT roof mounted lights
Cargo carrier on roof
200WATT 110v power inverter (under centre console)
Extra 12V socket (Centre console)
Garmin GPS (permanently mounted on dash)
Driving camera (under rear view mirror)
Mini Mag Lite mounted to side of driver's seat
Aftermarket centre console
2nd and 3rd row LED tap night lights
Privacy curtains to close in the 2nd and 3rd row
Centre mounted bracket for camping fan/light combo
Removable rear storage shelf with hanging fishing rod holders
Mag Lite holder and flashlight installed on spare tire jack door

Additionally, I would like to soon add a CB radio up front (If anyone has a recommendation on one it would be greatly appreciated)
Storage for roof mounted Jerry Cans (as it only has a 62L tank)
If you have any other ideas let me know, I will post pics of these mods shortly, and PLEASE, I am not looking for any sarcastic or idiotic mods.

Welcome to here, from another noob (just joined this month myself :p ). Hey,no shame in minivan'ing it...until I traded it in for my Wife's new-ish Camry (it's an '11 V6 XLE) last summer (a year ago come July 4),we did much of the same with a '98 Mercury Villager I'd bought specifically for such,as well as bike hauling (sporting a '98 Jeep Cherokee now-a-days,parked along side her Camry,LOL).

We weren't so fortunate with rear seating for camping in the Merc though...the rear seat wasn't removable (without permanently removing it,mind you-we did remove the middle "captain's chairs"...still have those in the shed at some property we own with burnt house on it,hahaha!),but it would fold upright (seat bottom) and slide right against the back of the front seats. My son and I camped out in it in that position more than a couple of times (being 5'9" myself, with my son 12 present day,it was "just enough" room). I don't have any pics of it with sleep pads/bags and such, but here are a few pics none-the-less...

With the Trek/Xtracycle cargo bike (which we used for both errand running that year,as well as bike camping trips)

Loaded with some bikes I'd picked up to refurbish and donate...

Man...a minivan is just SO dang useful with some thinking! I had actually told my Wife, that if I couldn't find a Jeep that "spoke to me" when shopping earlier this year, that I might get another. (trust me when I say I'm completely hooked on my Jeep and so glad I found it...but I would have put good use to another van too) :)

Don't be ashamed of your minivan for one minute. I've been rocking various minivans for the last 12 years and have taken them all kinds of places I shouldn't have.

Probably the best was taking one off road over the La Sal mountain near Moab. The faces of all the folks with jacked up Jeeps and various hard core off road vehicles were priceless as I came bouncing past in my stock Dodge Caravan, cackling all the way.

Admittedly the wife and I are looking at getting a dedicated off road vehicle but I will always love my minivan for it's unsurpassed ability to do damned near anything I need it to do.

Much love for the minivan, without question.

Well its good to see that I am not the only one...anyway here is my current setup,
IMG_0561.jpg
The Action Packer houses all of my 'roadside gear"
Fishing rod holders are currently installed on the back of the 3rd row seat and my fishing gear is in the well.
Like I mentioned earlier, with three kids (& a stroller now) i need every square inch of storage available.

MichaB,
You are right, they can almost do anything! I remember when I first got the van and was heading to a camp in Northern Ontario, the dirt road was all washed out in sections and there were a couple stuck cars and vans. I was lucky enough to make it all the way through by carefully choosing my attack angle and a little bit of luck. It is a good thing that the Stow N Go seat wells are plastic though!

Its not always what you drive; but what you do with it. If your van gets you and the fam out of the house and into the great outdoors; that's all that matters:)

Love it. It's about using whatever you have and getting out there. You're doing more with your van than most of us with 4wd rigs. Well done!

Drive what you've got!

I have met a ton of people who have done huge overland adventures across many continents in standard 2wd minivans. Well done.

Nothing wrong with getting out there with what you already have. There have been a couple examples of lifted Chrysler vans on the forum too.
