New Project :- TURBO Time.

Well we have it all together but no exhaust brake at this stage as I'm having a few problems scoring one at the right price but we keep looking. Time to take it for the first test run out on the road. I've opened the fuel on the pump one turn as a start.

I need to go to Brisbane to pick up my new gears for the transfer case mod so that will have to do. About 1400 Klm round trip.

Lets say that the change in the way it drives makes it a new vehicle. I still have some more adjusting to do but it certainly has been worthwhile. On the trip down the highest I saw exhaust temp go was 533°C with a boast of 13.7Psi. A lot of time running in the range of 420°C and 10-12Psi boast. For the return trip I gave the fuel another another half turn open. This raised the exhaust temp up to 546°C and highest boast of 14.3Psi. So there is still some room for more fuel. Boast comes on nice and steady.
Hills that I would have to change down to third gear before are now being taken in top gear and I even have enough acceleration to pass slower cars.

Costing:- Turbo--------------------------------$1.000.00
Intake Manifold Parts---------------- 120.00
Exhaust and intake piping----------- 750.00
Egt AFR and Boast gauges---------- 390.00
Intercooler--------------------------- 50.00
Sundrie Items (bolts, steel)---------- 100.00
My Time (lots of hours)------------- ????.??
Other needs to make it all good Air-con condenser $425.00. More sundries and piping then regas.

Great work.

I just picked up mine from Turbo Glide and can report that mine is also like a new truck.

Lots better.... Can accelerate up hills!

Beforehand you had to drive with foot to the floor all the time. Now I never used full throttle.

I am impressed you can spool that, I had minimal luck on mine with that basic size turbo.

What rpm are you starting to see full boost at?

My guess is that turbo is not in its effeciency range yet, prob need to get it into 18-22 psi range to maximize it, any plans to add more boost?

Talk about a transformation, given the wide ratio spread from 3rd to 4th, this is an impressive increase in driveability, still on my list to do one day....

I see boast anywhere from 1500 RPM but is very relative to load. If cruising on the flat I will see very little boast but start putting the nose up hill and feeding more accelerator it climbs steadily.
It doesn't have a waste gate so more boast is gained by more fuel which I will be adding.

Should have done it a long time ago, was just not committed enough. Now I'm happy I did. I can probably put together a list of parts I used so you can start collecting !

Thanks Dan, I'm not sure it would suit though as I have the small block 3.9litre, not the mighty 4.2:), the turbo may be too large for the 3.9, but happy to take advice on that as this is one area I know diddly squat about.!

An Update.
With our trip I had a good chance to make my turbo earn it's living and for the most part it did well. Especially on the highway.
BUT and there is always a BUT.
I've also got a problem that arises when we are poking along in top gear in the 1500/1750 Rpm range and get to a slight rise and give it just a little acceleration, my exhaust temp takes a quick rise and goes from around 290°C to in excess of 600°C. I know the problem is from over fueling at low or next to no boast and to solve it I need to get more air in at lower Rpm or take some fuel away. I can get a new exhaust housing for the turbo which I can change the AR from .61 to .57. This will bring boast on earlier but by how much earlier. Taking some fuel away certainly is not what I want to do as I will lose my top end power that I like. I'm in the process of trying to source a boast compensator to fit to my injector pump which probably will solve all the problems and by what I read should also improve my fuel economy as I wouldn't be putting in excess fuel at lower Rpm.

Hmm, I am kinda in the same boat as you, but I have a 4.9 with a td05h evo 3 8cm housing. I dint have the fuel problem but I am slow spool. I was thinking go down to a td05 wheel might help since the original turbo was a td04.

Yours was a td06?

Yes mine is a td06.
I believe that you have a boast compensator (but I could be wrong) and it sounds like you need to tweak it a bit. From what I'm reading you can control spool up as well by varying fuel at the right time. Now being computerized that may be a problem.
