New RAM half-ton EcoDiesel gets 28mpg?..

Edmunds.com recently purchased a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. It's the Top of the line Laramie trim, 4x4, with the 3.55 gears. EPA estimates 22 mpg in combined city and highway driving for this combination. Edmunds has enjoyed 22.9 mpg so far.

The company also has a Chevy Silverado with 5.3L Gas V8. They have recorded 17.4 mpg overall with the Chevy. That makes the EcoDiesel 32% more fuel efficient.

Gasoline prices have been on the rise in California, where Edmunds is based. Now the cost of diesel fuel is about the same as regular unleaded gas. So all of the Ram's 30% fuel efficiency advantage stays in your wallet.

Biggest disappointment is the Ecodiesel's official 1,064 lb payload capacity. This is a true half-ton truck.

If you are not going to tow often the pentastar is a better deal I think, I have a 2013 and I average 22 in ATL traffic. Towing it has a big advantage. The payload on my quad cab with pentastar 8speed is 1700 pounds on the door sticker.

they had one in display at Overland Expo. I did not have much time to look at it but it was really quiet and the interior (leather) was really nice. I can see myself owning one in the future.

I'm content with my F150 5.0, but If this was out when I bought my truck in 2012, I probably would have bought it.

Edmunds.com has a Ram 1500 Ecodiesel in its long term test fleet. After 8984 miles, the truck is averaging 22.2 mpg overall. On a long highway trip through western states, they saw fuel economy above 30 mpg for short segments of the trip. Overall, the trip, which was almost exclusively high speed highway driving, averaged 23.2 mpg.

The Edmunds report says they used 11.5 gallons of diesel exhaust fluid. That's a little more than the 10 gallons of DEF per 10,000 miles that Ram says you should expect.

Claiming that the Ecodiesel "experiment" has been a success, Ram just announced that they will increase the production of diesel pickups in 2015. Diesels will be found under the hood of 20% of 1500 series trucks built during the 2015 model year. Italian engine builder VM Motori will continue to supply the 3.0L V6 turbodiesel engines.

Ram says the diesels sell more quickly than comparably equipped gas engine models, and that the diesel trucks tend to have a higher level of trim and accessories. Both trends go straight to Ram's bottom line.

Not to toot my own horn here, but my 7.3L Powerstroke gets 27-28mpg on the freeway running my homebrew biodiesel.

And I'm the Easter Bunny, My 7.3, driven very carefully at 55-65mph, gets 17.5 -18.2mpg on flat land with 3.73 gears and no load.

No it doesnt.

I dont care if your fuel is free, MPG is MPG, and you are not getting better than 20 with any generation 7.3 PS

I respectfully beg to differ and have 2 years of mileage data to back it up. On my recent trip to Idaho last week I drove 746.9 miles and consumed 27.3 gallons. This was verified using a calibrated truck stop pump. Having a 2wd with a 6 speed and a chip set for tow mode certainly helps.
