New Tacoma vs Colorado vs Ranger

They look better in person, honestly.

The real travesty is the total abandonment of the extended cab/long bed body style.
I don't pay much attention so when you mentioned this I went to build a Ranger and all they are offering me is Super Crew. Well that stinks. But honestly the shape and size of new midsize trucks doesn't work for me for a lot of reasons so if push did ever come to shove I'd probably move to a full size anyway so I guess it's not absolutely show stopping. I don't need cab space, I need cargo space. And I'm 6' tall so a 5' long bed doesn't exactly work if you want to lay down in it.

There are a few noteworthy trim packages for the Colorado and Canyon trucks

AT4
AT4X
ZR2
Trail Boss

ZR2 and ATX4 both seem to have the selectable front and rear lockers, taller factory lift, better ground clearance, and better approach and departure angles. They also have those fancy dancy shocks.......

The AT4 and Trail Boss trim levels are about $5k - $7k cheaper than ZR2 and AT4X equipped trucks

I've never owned a vehicle with a front locker and am not 100% certain I need this feature....

The at4 and trail boss is not a selectable locker, you have to spin the wheels quite a bit to get it to lurch forward.

Re: front locker, I didn't think I'd use it either and considered it a 'nice to have' thing, but barely a couple of months after taking delivery, I derped out and managed to sink my truck up to the axles in the soft beach sand here. 4Low plus both lockers had me walking right out with pretty minimal fuss.

It's still very much mostly a 'nice to have' thing, but I wasn't mad about having it at the time. :D

I just can't do those ugly wheels on the AT4 package trucks, or even any of the GMC Canyon

Plus, Denali packaged Canyons get 20" wheels/tires, which I won't do

Even some Trail Boss trucks have 20" setups.....nope!!!

The Colorado 17" wheels, especially the ZR2, look so much better

I've never had a problem getting out of sand by airing down.... with 2wd and an open diff. It's like magic....

Agreed - I do wish we had a bit more input from new Taco owners, mostly because I'm curious what their experience has been like and that was the other truck I was shopping (specifically a TRD OR) when I pulled the trigger.
