No.5 1965 Australian Army Trailer

A ply template, some careful drilling and it all lines up :) Trailer sits level, rear door and tyre clears everything, can't ask for more. Tomorrow some welding of the side braces and the hitch is done.

Nice trailer. The US Army M416 is equivalent in size and weight. The M416 is a petite and lightweight trailer.

That 16mm plate is way too thick and looks out of place with those puny studs. Suggest you replace it with something sized more appropriately.

And personally, I would have kept the pintle, but that's my personal bias. :)

Did you read he wasn't allowed to keep it?

I'll be trimming the plate down to remove the corners etc, to be honest though I am not building this for anything other than use, if it looks out of place I'm fine with that as long as it holds up on the thousands of KM's of corrugations it will have to withstand (corrugations that break engine mounts and bend hitch tongues if you don't load the trailer right). So suggestion noted and duly ignored unless there's a reason other than perceived aesthetics that I should change it ;)

As for the lunette, if you lived where I do and wanted to keep it you would not be able to tow the trailer on the road ;)

Steve,
Great looking trailer...
The coupling mod looks great ......
Would a couple of triangular gussets be of an advantage ....
In the corner behind the Machitch......
Aussie roads are a bit harsh on trailers even tho the plate is 16mil....
Just my 2bobs worth .....

Finished the hitch mount other than giving the square corners a trim to round. Was recovering from a late night and early morning run so packed up earlier than planned and didn't get on to the mudflaps, I'll do them during the week in the evenings after work.

Found some paint in Army Green in spray packs (Rustoleum). Tested it on a few chips, match is pretty good with the bottom of the pic sprayed from the can and the top as it already was. Should do fine for the drawbar freshen up and painting the new hitch setup.

Looking good Steve. I'm interested to see what the spring hangers are fixed to. It looks like there's no chassis rail running down the side? Any chance of a pic?

Not mine but this is the chassis. Pretty nice setup :)

How much can I get done in a 1hr lunch break and still leave enough time for a leisurely lunch, turns out I can cut two mudflaps out of a sheet of rubber, cut two pieces of aluminium flat bar to length and attach them to the bottom of one mudflap (rubber sandwiched between them). At this rate I need one more lunch break to finish them.

You're just not working hard enough! :) You planning on some chains?

Actually I started Googling these things after seeing that chassis photo wondering if it would suit my proposed build. Eventually found the wheel track is around 1320 to 1370mm, bit too skinny for me as I was chasing 1530. Bit miffed about that.
