Non-lead Foot LR3 Owners Question

I had pretty much decided to continue with my 300TDi D1 but my LR mechanic recently purchased a 2007 LR3 HSE from a customer who didn't want to pay what his truck needed. He has fixed it up, installed green filters, runs regular gas and is getting 13 lts per 100 kms (21.7 mpg imp, 18 mpg US). That's not bad. Still less than the 27 mpg imp I get with the D1 diesel but not bad to move into lots of interior space and a very comfy ride. I wondered what others were seeing, those who drive a bit slower. My commute is 500 miles a week, 80% highway/20% city so the LR3 with regular fuel might not be that bad. I drive back roads so my usual top speed is 60 mph. Curious as used LR3's are starting to show up under $10k around here.

I am about 80/20 as well, averaging about 200 miles per week. I have on 08 LR3 w/ General Grabber AT2 tires (which hurt mpg a little bit) but I am averaging 19 mpg. I go about 73 to 75 on the highway with cruise control most of the time. In the winter the mpg drops down to 16 or so when it's cold but I also see 20+ on longer road trips the rest of the year no problem. Sounds like you shouldn't have a problem getting 18+. My wife's 08 sport with all season tires is getting just under 20 and she's about 50/50.

In the UK the guys with the diesel V6 were complaining about only getting 30-35mpg. I got about 14-16, but I have a very heavy foot.

Uk diesel owner.
This includes winter driving, off road use and trailer towing.
90% of my driving is urban and my drive to work is only 4 miles.

I also have a rather mud filled intercooler which needs cleaned out and the Duratracs have taken 3 mpg off my average.

23 mpg for a diesel doesn't sound all that good. I always thought the Diesel LR3's were much better than the v8 versions.

The app is road trip LE. It's a free one.

The diesels suffer a bit as in standard form they lack the grunt of the v8 so you end up working the engine harder. My area is hilly as well so more fuel wasted.

The off road tyres have taken 3 mpg so with road ones it would be showing 26.3, on a good run it can sit at mid 30s though.

A good remap will see it back at 25/26 mpg.

We had a long winter here, with snow and frost from October to may so the stations were running "winter diesel" for longer, that is well known to knock the averages.

I have heard of people averaging over 30 in diesels and some in mid 30s but they are motorway cars only.

USA spec LR3 HSE, 4.4 V8, always use 91 octane and has the HD package if you think it matters.

Usually I drive 80% highway, 20% city. The highway portion is many times traffic laden with many stops and start. I get 14-15 MPG.

On a recent 1000 mile trip that was mostly highway at 70-80 MPH, but included about 50 miles of fairly easy 20ish MPH off-road and about 5 miles of slow technical off-road it got about 18 MPG for the trip.

15-18 is a good average here but with Mud terrain tires. With street tires I was in the 17-19, maybe 20 if I really tried

I have street tires, and drive 90% city traffic. I have been turning off the A/C and driving with the windows down. I do go up hill both ways. It's Cincinnati, so I live on one hill and work on another, so up and down hill both directions.

I average 13.88 MPG. Here is my last 6 months of fill ups. When I only drive the Highway, I get much better gas mileage.

Thanks for all the responses. I think at 26-29 mpgs, the 300tdi is the way to go or stick to in my case. I installed an 800 watt sound system which kicks *** so unless a really super deal comes along, and it might as I'm involved with a LR repair shop, I'll keep driving the diesel.

The 300tdi is a great engine, plenty here have outlasted the original disco bodyshell and now live in defenders and series landys.

The LR3 does have an extra ton or so weight over the D1.

The tdv6 is a good engine as well, with regular servicing and good fuel, the highest miles I've seen on one is 476k. That D3 is sitting on 556k and is an 05 model. I believe it's the highest mileage one in the UK. It's on it's 4th service book and has full main dealer history... Haha.
