low mile used 2UZFE and transfercase = cheap
Aussie supplied 5spd = expensive

Then of course, the labor:yikes: That would be the real kicker.

If the 3FE did give up the ghost, you would IMO be better served just simply rebuilding it or swapping in a 2F block for a little more stroke...

I've been seriously looking into this and found that at a minimum (with approximate measurements), a 2 inch body lift would be required (possibly a 3 inch) for the 2F block under the 3FE head and EFI (the 2FE) to fit in the FJ80. Not a big deal, however my ARB bull bar doesn't fit very well (at least if I want to use the headlamps).

Hmmm...that doesn't sound too good, and I saw your comments on the hood scoop. My swap I put the 3FE into a 2F truck so didn't run into any clearance issues.

FYI (as you likely already know) the water pump is offset a good amount 3F<->2F so you'll need to modify the shroud.

BUT, as stated on Mud, a correctly cam'd 2F with the 3F-E head (and manual tranny) would make an outstanding off-highway driveline IMO.

Its a bit too dark out to take an accurate measurement but here's what I can offer. With the hood open and sighting across from one fender top to the other, the engine's highest point is roughly 1/4" higher, which is the top of the intake/airflow meter where it says EFI. Hope that helps a bit.

I believe the 2F block is approximately 2.125 inches taller than the 3F block. A person may get by with a 2 inch body lift.

The way I measure hood clearance when building a car is:

Get some modeling clay or Play Dough and work it until it is very soft.

Make a cone or a few cones about 6 inches tall.

Place the cones in various locations on the highest point(s) of the engine.

Close the hood gently until it latches.

Open the hood.

Measure the new height of the cone(s).

Uh, did I miss something?

For the costs people are throwing around, I'd be looking into a half cut Diesel from Japan.

IIRC they put a super awesome diesel HD-FTE engine and stock five speed plus transfer into the 80 chassis. For the cost of harnesses, accesories etc, you could proabaly source a half cut HZJ81 that woudl have all of the electronics and accessories you would need. Also, everything is sure to fit!

You get a few other cool benefits like a 24v starting system and native 12v everything else.

With fuel costs where they are it makes sense.

Maybe I didn't read deeply enough (I have to admit I did just scan) but if you're not against diesel then it's a no brainer as a SBC that will last 100K miles vs a Toyota that will triple that at least and cost less in fuel in the meantime...
