NPS Fines AWD drivers…

Good! Those things don't have the articulation or ground clearance for rough trails. Nor do they have anything to hook to pull them out of whatever trouble they got in to.

It’s not so much that it’s the damage done on the roads from slipping tires. It is funny to see people send it hard though- I got passed on a rough and I mean freaking rough road last week by a Chevy equinox. I was in 4lo crawling around getting my head booped around and this guy was riding my bumper. I pulled over at the next pullout and he took off like a rocket..😆

Curious why this is in the EV section?

Probably because they are about the worst as far as off-road ability and yet people take them on Jeep trails. Almost zero articulation. I've now watched several off-road recovery videos of electric trucks. Here's one, you'll see the Rivian high centered at about 3 minutes:
Seen several on the Tesla truck also. It does great on pavement but when the ground gets uneven forward progress stops...one front tire and the opposite rear tire just dangling in the air. Plus they are really heavy; can't really mount big flotation tires on them so they sink in mud or soft sand.

To be fair, why were you crawling in 4Lo on terrain that an Equniox could breeze through? Are you one of those guys that slows to 1 mph to turn into a gas station? ;)

Threat letters ain't going to change anything. $500.00 fine would be a different story overtime.

......if they want to get their AWD or Rabbit Convertible out into the middle of no where to communion with nature they're going to do it.

Go read the article. It's practically misinformation.

In my fleet, I have a 2012 Ford Escape. It's a FWD unibody SUV like the rest, but it is technically capable of a 50/50 torque split, so it is 4WD. Compared to a Honda CRV or Toyota Rav4, will that minor detail matter to the trail? Not a chance.

The equipment the article actually recommends is a locking differential. Fining people for AWD vs 4WD is a slippery slope that law enforcement will never have the knowledge or subtlety to handle correctly, so innocent drivers are going to be caught up in legal problems they shouldn't be.
