Off Road Camp Trailer Build

After 5 years of building my 76 FJ40, I am ready to start another project. I have come to the realization that the dog and wife (neither of which I had when I purchased the FJ40), plus all the camping gear, would not fit. It was either take the 4Runner or Tundra to camp, or build a trailer for the 40. Well, I decided to build a trailer!

Tow vehicle-

I found a tongue box I thought I'd use, but after looking at it, I'll just make my own. There are a few things I don't like about it that I can fix with my own design.

Making fenders from scratch. They are the same angle/width/height of my 40's rear fender openings-

I made the trailer tongue removable so I could fit he trailer and 40 in one my garage parking spots! It fits with about 2" to spare!

I am assuming you had to re-stud the hubs for the SCS F5 wheels you got? If so, what studs did you end up using?

FYI you can buy lug nuts that match the toyota alloy wheel requirements but use the 1/2 lugs.

I looked at the 1/2" lug nuts but they seem to be too big in diameter to work with the SCS Ray10s. Ones I have seen on Amazon are 20mm, which are too big. I need to take a measurement but I think 19mm may work

Thanks but I do not think these will work with SCS wheels. You need spline lug nuts

Okay, I just know these work with 1/2 lugs and toyota alloy rims, I have a set and other people have looked before, and they wind up changing the lugs. Which I agree is the better way to go but they are 6 bucks a lug. And this is 20 or 24 of em, so plenty of spares.

I ordered some 1/2" 20mm diameter lugs from Amazon. We'll see if they fit on Saturday.

From the drawings of the one I linked to it looks like .73 inch which is 18.542mm. If the 20mm dont fit let me know I will send you one of the ones I have, too bad they are out of stock on amazon but I bet the could be found elsewhere.

Still loving the trailer every time we use it... haven't really had to change or modify anything!

Your build inspired me to learn how to weld and build my own. I am building mine to fit 23Zero Walkabout 72 so it is 72" plus the front section (~20"). My biggest difficulty is engineering doors that are water tight without using RV doors. Oh and I ended up not tack welding the sheet metal but rather weld the entire perimeter to waterproof it.

Glad I could help!

All you need to do is overlap the sheet metal on the door about 3/4" and put some foam weatherstripping around the perimeter. That should keep just about all of the water out... I've never had an issue with it.

Door are tough though... I've flown $3mil aircraft that the doors leak water. There's a reason modern cars have two layers of weatherstripping I suppose.

Built a 5 gallon water tank out of 6 inch pvc. Pipe. Wired the trailer with a Keyline battery isolator. Should be able to run fridge and top battery while driving. Ran 4 gage wire protected buy 50 amp fuse from 4Runner battery to rear bumper with Anderson power pole connectors.

You must be talking about ASTARS. I remember when our fleet was brand new and the first time it rained the greenhouse windows leaked water all over our new avionics install. just want to tell you how much I am inspired by your trailer build. I’m almost done outfitting mine now and can’t wait to go camping. I would have never gotten this far without seeing your build step by step on this website! Just waiting for my Dometic fridge that I ordered 6 weeks ago. Would love to see 0SUPike99 pictures of trailer build!
