Off road pop up trailer?

Heres the deal, I am leaving Connecticut the middle of May and heading west. Some spots I plan on going to are yellowstone, grand tetons, then down to lake tahoe, yosimite, then to the coast and all the way up the california coast to oregon and possibly washington if I have enough money. I plan on staying at places for a few days at a time, or weeks depending on how beautiful it is. I built an entire sleeping setup in my ARE camper top and I have realized that my 4 month road trip is going to get a little cramped after a while. I would like a place to chill if its a rainy day and be able to sleep comfortably. The camper top is kinda like a coffin and me being 6'4" does not help.

So I have been looking at either a pop up or a slide in. But a slide in is super top heavy and kills my bed for storage (Not to mention they look really stupid in my opinion). So the Pop up is what I am leaning towards at the moment. They can be left at a camp site for some day wheelin trips. They are super light to tow and wont kill my gas mileage, and they have heat, fridge, and stove built right in, which means I dont have to buy any of those things extra. My only concern is that I want to find some real back woods camping spots those things look a little weak. So, my real question here is has anyone done it? Beefed up the frame a little? Put some sliders or small bumpers for steep inclines? Lifted with 31's? I was thinking of doing all of these things so I have a cool little off road pop up I can drive onto the beach with or take on some remote trails. Keep in mind I am not going to do real serious rock crawlin or anything wild, but I would like to go off the beaten path more than once on this trip. Let me know what you guys think!

Cool Ill check that out. Just realized I posted in the wrong forum. If a mod sees this please move to the trailer forum. Thanks!

Starcraft makes some tent trailers beefed up for off-road use also.
I think they're at starcraftrv.com. Their off-road models are labeled
'RT'. Good luck, sounds like a great trip.

look for a coleman colorado model. they have one bed and are super light. I have one that is lifted on 235-75-15 tires and has a 4 step to get in! bare essentials, no stove, fridge, furnace etc. just a slide out bed and a table that folds down into another bed. 6'4 may be a bit of a problem I am 6' and barely fit on the bed but on an angle it would work.

mines lifted with BIG lift blocks between the axle and the springs but I hope to change that.

well done

I thought there was a finders fee when you help a brotha out?

I've seen it on there for a couple of weeks now, so good luck with it.

Well here she is. I am going to make this into a little build thread. So, first things first. I have to get some nice wheels and tires and lift the crap out of this trailer. The stock 8in wheels dont cut it. Does anyone have suggestions? I pulled the springs off today and found I can only run a 25in overall diameter wheel and tire combo, because the trailer is so wide and I have to keep the tires under the trailer. The other problem is I want a wide tire that can handle sand, and the last problem is it looks like I am going to have to get a longer axle so I can actually fit something in there without hitting the inside frame. I am thinking of getting stock jeep 5 spoke wheels and putting on some 235/60-15. Not a big offroad tire like I want (because trailer is so wide) but It will give me 23" of clearance to the trailer frame. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

damn

Damn Euro if the guy had shown as many foto's as you I would have grabed it
when I first saw it.
Why not just go with taller springs and some wide ATV tires for now and see
how that works. Granted it won't be a rock crawler but it would be good in
sand and ruf roads.

Good luck
