Off road pop up trailer?

hey very cool! Looks like a shorter version of mine! My 235-75-15 just touch the inside well. I was thinking of getting some 1" wheel spacers to make it better. Also if you look there should be a spot on the hitch reach for those bars to sit in that hold up the bed.

Also if you look at the bottom of the bed from underneath. there is enough room to get some rigid foam sheets glued up in there. helps alot with winter cold!

Also add some alum checker plate to the front. mine is all dented from rocks flying up so this year I am covering it with checker plate.

Nice find, and for $600 I think you got a good deal. Add a lock-n-rol, battery, fridge, propane tank and a stove and you will have some great weekends!

ATV tires eh? I saw some pretty good sized lawn tractor tires at the tractor supply today. Only thing is I am going to be driving 5k+ miles on this trip. Think they will hold up after a long time at 65mph+? If so I like that idea for this time around, because I can just flip the axle and im good to go. I guess I had im my mind a BIG trailer. I was thinking of having the frame at least 2 feet off the ground with stock jeep wheels and tires or something. That way I could go anywhere. I guess since that I am not going to do any serious wheelin on this trip I dont have to go as crazy with the trailer mods I guess. I am running out of time. Between getting this truck ready and moving out of my place I cant seem to find enough time in a day.

A waeco cf-50 is going to be ordered. Just got my battery isolator in the mail last week, and I have been looking into a propane furnace/heater setup. Any recommendations that wont break the bank for heat on cold nights?

I don't know that i'd want to tow atv tires at 65mph all day.
For the lift and stuff i'd probably just build a new frame from scratch. That frame might not take the weight of the larger tires and axle.

I have a coleman santa fe I did a spring over conversion on yesterday. Got about 4-5 inches of lift on it. I test fit a 205/14 and it fits great and looks good.

With yours if I was going as high as you plan, I would sit that camper (and its frame) on top of another frame. If you do that, consider making the tongue long enough that you can set-up the camper without un-hitching. That would make for quick overnighter set-up.

Not a bad idea. Ill take a look tomorrow and see how hard that would be. Frame itself is in good shape. I was going to reinforce the crap out of it just to make sure this thing could hang off road. Wish I found this 2 months ago so I had time to really go wild with it.

Post pics of your wheel and tire setup if you can. I dont mind doing a quick beef up for this trip. Anything is going to be better than what it is now. I do plan when I get back and settled down again to make this thing the ultimate off road pop up. I would love to do a tongue long enough to pull out while hitched and also be able to put a diamond plate toolbox up front for recovery gear and whatever else could be needed.

Why not just go with taller springs and some wide ATV tires for now and see
how that works.

ATV tires are not rated for highway speeds nor are they DOT approved for that application, for good reason. Using them at highway speeds could result is dangerous trailer sway conditions and potential blowout.

Nice score.

As Mario has said to me before, if you are going to use Jeep wheels, the inner bore size on the wheel is too small for a lot of trailer hubs. They have to use spacers to clear the hub for a lot of factory type wheels.

Since you need to space things out anyways, you might be able to kill two birds with one stone, so to say.

The idea of building a stout frame and bolting this to it is not a bad idea. Sounds like time is going to be the killer for you. Good luck.

Yeah time is the killer. Between trying to sell all my stuff, move my stuff, and work on my rig and camper I cant seem to find enough time in a day. I am laid off right now which really helps, but still seem to be short on time. I think I am gonna do the best I can for as little money as possible and when this trip is over, deck this thing out to a serious level and really make it wild.

Damn Euro if the guy had shown as many foto's as you I would have grabed it
when I first saw it.
Why not just go with taller springs and some wide ATV tires for now and see
how that works. Granted it won't be a rock crawler but it would be good in
sand and ruf roads.

Good luck

Do that then add a thick skid plate from trailers front leading edge to under the axle. Then slide your unit over larger obstacles; not treading lightly IMO but I saw a older clamshell trailer/lifted cruiser combo last year doing so (North cariboo, aug, rough 60 with diesel and a straight pipe; just so after our chat you'll know it was you/me). From the look of the aluminum skid plate under the trailer the fellow applied to the school of 'if it's not working your not using enough throttle'.

Nice compact unit BTW. :victory:

I have one of those mr. heaters for ours. it works good but would be nice if it had a thermostat so when it got to tropical levels inside it would shut off! I would go into the trailer about 1/2 hour before bed and turn it on then after we were in bed I would reach out and turn it to pilot. same in the morning.

I will snap a few pics of our suspension set-up this weekend.

In Central Texas it's not a heater issue. It's heat in general. Handbrake has basically told me no a/c = no trailer. I've found several pop-ups that I like but no a/c. Do the indoor swamp coolers really work that well?
