I told myself that I'd never pick up another 26" bike.....

Until I ran across this steal of a deal for a 1998 Stumpjumper Comp HT. I remember DROOLING over this bike back in the day. I need to do a few things (change bar, stem, saddle, etc.), but I am looking forward to riding this bike.

Well I have been through a few bikes in the last couple months.

In my Flip pile right now is a VERY nice 1983 Trek 500 (it was a 520 till I stole the triple cranks for my wife's Mixte in page one :bike_rider: ). 1986 Raleigh 460 Technimum. This bike showed up with a bunch of 105 parts on it dated 91. Swapped them out with light action that would have been what it came with.

A Trek 950 that my buddy found on I75 still attached to a Thule rack after it fell off something. Whoever lost it never came back. He waited with it for 25 minutes before throwing it in the truck and selling it to me. The back tire has a bald spot where it looks like it was getting dragged. I think it was on the back of a RV. The bike was VERY beat up and neglected. Tires dry rotted. The Alvino shifters didn't work. Fixed them last night and need to lube the bearings today. Think this one is going too my buddy.

Sold the SR600 after deciding I just wasn't enjoying it and I wanted to buy something else.
Also had a very nice 88 Trek 360 come and go.

Have a very clean 95 Proflex Arcadia I bought thinking that it just needed a rear Elastomer spring. Stuffed a couple spring bushings in it to get it rideable and the drive side peddle hole was stripped. Need to Helicoil that or part it.

My 95 T700 (58cm) is in limbo (and pieces). I found a 98 T700 that was the next size up (63cm). Showed up with Flat bars and 8speed thumb shifters on it and the drops with 8speed STI's in a bag. Cannondale touring bikes make big jumps in sizes. Always felt the 95 was a little on the small size. My optimum size in a road frame is 60cm. I find that despite it being a hair tall I really like the 63cm. The 98 got all the 9speed parts put on it. Already but 400 miles on it commuting and pleasure rides.

Trying to decide if the 95 is going to be sold or build up as a modern "Randoneer" with 8speed STI for Sunday rides and any event rides I do like the Tour de Cure.

The wild card bike was a $8 garage sale find on my street. Its a 1984 Fuji Touring III with a 25 inch frame and a 48 spoke extra HD back wheel (rims match and are correct according to the catalogs). :bike_rider: The frame size is making me think this may be the Randonner and sell the 95 T700. It is in rough cosmetic condition and needs to be fully sanded down and painted. It is actually in decent mechanical condition. It has marks from a full set of racks front and rear. Wish I knew the history (The lady I bought it from does mass estate buys so she didn't know). This bike has been toured a LOT and maintained. It rides wonderful.

A bike that I stumbled onto for my girlfriend.
IMG_0704.jpg

It is a steel custom from a builder by the name of Micheal Celmins. It was apparently built for some fellow's girlfriend and she rarely if ever rode it. Those are 700c wheels. Bar & stem are Cinelli 26mm parts. I've yet to find a listing for that short of a stem in any of the Cinelli oriented pages. My tape measure says 42cm CtC. This one cost me quite a bit more than my garage sale find, but it is a sweet heart of a machine & my GF likes riding it because she can go FAST!
She does have some troubles with the friction shifters so I'm on the look-out for some used "Brifters". The wheels shown were built by a friend quite a while back and were put on for the eventual index shifting. I'm not sure why, but I feel compelled to set aside & save everything that I upgrade.

If there are any who remember or know of Rory O'Roark (sp?), I've been told that Celmins built him several frames; and that he stopped building frames just short of 500.

My name is Flounder, I'm a roadie. <Welcome, Flounder> I've been skinny tire free for two seasons now. Now I live and play in the dirt full time.

Prescott is where I live and ride. I feel super lucky to live here.

I have other bikes (Dura Ace and Force equiped road and 'crossers) but this is the bike that counts. I'm over owning a fleet.

Spot Brand 29er single speed. Fox fork, White Industry cranks and Ti BB. Thompson bar and stem with Chris King headset and hubs.

Seen here outfitted for a three day tour of the Colorado Trail. Also serves as my daily ride, sometimes commuter, race machine or patio decoration.

What is that aluminum bracket that you have for your stuff sack off of your saddle? A cut up bottle cage?
Looks like a great overnight set up.

I am really digging this one

Thanks. I am really enjoying it. Did a 47 mile ride on it yesterday. Just a joy to ride. Unfortunately I found cracks in the rim around the spoke holes so I am about to try my hand at wheel building.

Here is "Scrappy". A while back I bought a set of Araya anodized black wheels that had thread on free hub. I was going to build a light single speed with them (and may still do it). Had a 1988 Schwinn 4130 world sport (built by Giant) that was rough and ended up parting it to fix other bikes.

Had a Trek 95 MTB that I sold the wheels to a buddy to help him out (could have sold the bike for a $100 but only had $20 in it so he bough the rims for $20). Threw the 7 speed free hub on the wheels, then stuck all the 950 drive train and bars onto the Schwinn. Rattle caned it satin black, outlined the lugs in red for that "rat rod" look and topped it off wit ha set of 700x23 Continental Ultra sports.

Rides nice! :bike_rider: I may need to add some travel agents or change levers to the brakes. The MTB Canti levers take a LOT of pressure to make the Shimano road bike brakes do their thing. It stops good just takes a lot of grip.

I also found a 70's Raleigh Grand prix 60cm at the curb with the trash. Missing the seat and post (probably a brooks) and the simplex rear derailleur is bet up bad other wise the bike is in surprisingly good condition. Picked up a 18 tooth BMX freewheel and give that a run for a while.

That...is a bit of ultra-light touring genius. It's little more than a Minoura dual-bottle bracket turned upside down. That bracket is normally used to mount two bottle cages behind your seat. I just inverted it and used it to mount an Outdoor Research "Hydrosack" stuffsack. The idea was to simply move the stuffsack down and away from my legs. Worked great. Added no weight to speak of.

By the way, this is more than just an overnight set up. The only limit on the number of days here, is food and water. With no water resupply, this set up would accommodate 3 riding days. With water and no food resupply, I could probably stretch this to 5 days depending on weather.

Picked up a brand new 1983 Fuji Del Ray yesterday for $25 at the thrift store. If this bike has 50 miles on it I would be surprised. :bike_rider:
Put air in the tires and took it for a couple laps. ride nice. Need to service the bearing out of fear that the grease has dried out.

Every now and then those gems show up

I have landed way more then I deserve. That Terry I posted on page one is also like new, more so then the Fuji. The 360 Trek and the 500 Trek were both very nice as well. That 73 Grand Prix frame cleaned up very nice. I found a decent Suntour 7 Derailleur that will work for it if I can't fix the Simplex. If I don't have to work this weekend I should have that on the road this weekend.

I live in a hilly upscale area. Lots of these hiding out around here. :bike_rider:

Lined up a set of Brifters for the Trek 950 Touring addition I am building for the wife. I now have all the parts to assemble (once I pick up the brifters) I hope to have that on the road this weekend as well and get my wife riding with me. I'll post that when I get it done.
