Oil and Octane

Great! Thanks for all of the replies everyone. It's looking like Mobil 1, regular or synthetic, is the popular choice here.

Couple of more questions:

-Why do you use Mobil 1? Why is it so popular?
-Can synthetic be recycled like regular oil?
-I've never run synthetic in my motor, and I think it actually has about 23,000 miles on the rebuild. Can I safely switch to synthetic at this stage or will I run into problems with seepage?

Thanks.

Mobil 1 syn in both my s/c 3.4 4runner and mazdaspeed miata, filters typically mobile 1, wix, napa gold (whatever good filter is on sale)
Both engines really need super unleaded which is only 91 octane in California, due to lots of mods. Change oil every 4-5k.

Why Mobil? even large oil companies that are not XOM (silently) buy Mobil lubricants for their rigs.

FWIW, I would run about 12k miles on M1EP in my Cruisers, drain into a clean can and re-use the used oil in my beater commuter car for another 5k or so. This beater Ford had 250k on the clock and ran like a top ON USED M1EP oil right to when I sold it last year.

My understanding is if it's API certified, they are all obligated to purchase their additives from a few select vendors. Hence my comment...
Anything API blessed is all variations of the same stuff.

Amsoil had a write up of why their top shelf oil is not API certified. Their reason was, as indicated above because they wanted to use their own source for additives, presumably better additives.
I doubt their is any independent study done that shows any great variation from one synthetic to the next.
And, you dispose of synthetic oil just like you would regular oil.

What first turned me on to Mobil 1 was when Scott drove to the Arctic Circle with Mobil 1 on a single change of oil. If it's good enough to make it through that, it's good enough for me. I probably could go longer than the 5k mile intervals I go now, but at $35 an oil change, it's not a big deal.

So, I have a follow up question. It' still tune-up related....

What type of spark plug wires are you running on your Toyota's?

I have to do a tune up in a month before a road trip and aside from oil and switching to Nippon Denso plugs I want to upgrade my plug wires to something other than the tiny Napa wires on the truck now.

As always, Thank you for your advice.

OEM Denso are always my preference.

I would only install NGK or Nippon Denso - they're only a few bucks a piece. Same thing for the spark plug wires - NGK or Denso
