Old's Cool

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
Too expensive anymore, sad to say. Maybe an old Nissan?

That's exactly what I thought...but we are still keeping our eyes open for the random rig with a "for sale" sign on the dash.
We picked up a super clean Geo Tracker 4x4 soft-top as a project build for peanuts that was parked in front of an old-timer's home, we're hoping for the same luck with a Toyota P/U.

Jealous! I want to get a tracker or sidekick for my wife

Good luck....look for a Mighty Max instead!

I bought this '89 from a friend, a bear clawed the hood while he was sleeping in it years before.

'91 Faux Lux

I'm going to do a proper build thread soon since the story seems worth telling – if only for cathartic reasons, but last July I purchased a '91 Pickup with a 2LTE diesel swap from Canada.
The vision was to turn it into a modern, yet mechanically simple, take on a Chinook/Sunrader. After my Fuso based rig left me stranded too many times I was looking for the most reliable, shortest wheelbase vehicle that could carry a ~1300lb flat bed camper, and three people. I'm certain I've put too much money into it but it's unique if nothing more.

Anyway, photos. Somehow the Autotrader ad is still up a year later.

@BajaSurfRIg yes it's an XP V2. Finally picked up the finished rig last week. I spent some time in it around the Sierras and after a few comments comparing it to a space ship, I've dubbed it the Lunar Overlander. Its small diesel does struggle on mountain passes (drive it by the EGT/temp gauge not speedometer) but on flat it does ~70mph comfortably with 33s and 4.88s. In my limited offroad experience (mostly on gravel around the Yuba river) it's remarkably stable and in 4L (with the 5speed) has plenty of torque going up inclines/crawling over small obstacles.

I know it's a departure of this thread's original "don't need 50 grand to go camping" but maybe it'll inspire some (like I was inspired by others) looking to build an overland camper to not automatically assume they need the newest truck and maybe keep more of these trucks on the road. And in my opinion, it certainly looks better than a similar current gen tundra setup.

Here's some photos. I also have a short video tour of it.

The 1st gen had a heart transplant from yota1 performance motors. .20 bore Rv cam, dual row timing set upgrade, can only run high test fuel now, but the power plant paired with the new 5:29 gears really scoots this old guy down the road.

This thread is so great! I'll add my 95 T100 to the mix, had for almost 3 years and it does the job quite well. It's not my daily driver but still racks up about 10k miles per year as the designated fun trip mobile, it's gotten us to some cool camp spots. It has no bells or whistles, actually it does whistle sometimes if there's a crosswind on the interstate.

Speaking of old Toyotas...anyone tried to sew a patch onto their ripped drivers seat? I have some good fabric around the house that I think would work just haven't gotten around to it yet

I think this might be the right place to ask for advice. I've had this 91 3.0 pickup for around a month and have been knocking out the to-do list. Next is some suspension work. The tires are 33". The front diff drop measures 4.5" center to center between the bolts and the rear has 2.5" blocks and I think some sort of short add a leaf. The leafs look really bad. What should I do to get things back level with the shell and more gear?
