Olympus E-510 for Beginner?

Buy Once, Cry Once
Hey,

I am new to photography and looking to get a digital SLR camera. I've done some research and thinking of getting a used Olympus E-510 with the standard 14-42mm lens. I can get it used for just under $300. Is this a good first DSLR? Do you recommend something different? If so why? Most of the pictures I plan on taking are of landscapes and wildlife.

Thanks for your input.

My first DSLR was an Olympus EVolt E300 with the 14-45 lens and a 45-150. It was a great camera and I would still have it had I not upgraded to an E500 body which is what I use now. They are great cameras.

An E-500 was my first and I still have it. Like any DSLR similar, there are a lot of functions to learn, but you can also ignore most and learn about them gradually.

I'm still rocking my E-510! It has been an excellent first DSLR and came with light small kit lenses of pretty good quality - excellent as kit lenses go. The 14-42 does well with landscape and is very easy to lug around, exactly the setup I crossed the Grand Canyon with a few years ago for primarily landscape and even some unexpected wildlife after all. Great colors and out of the camera JPEGS, I shoot raw+jpeg but rarely feel the need to process from raw files. Accepts CF cards and you can still find the 2gig m+ XD cards for cheaper than they ever were. It has it's shortcomings - small viewfinder - poor low light/contrast focusing - low quality at high ISO (I keep it at 100-200 rarely dipping to 400), but you will learn a lot from the work-arounds.
