On Board Air System....

Hello Forum,

First, here is what I have and what hope to get done.

I have ARB lockers and mini ARB compressor under the hood. I also have a 10 gallon Powertank for my onboard air needs.

I want to put in a single air system that does multiple things. Run my lockers, air up tires, and minor use of air tools. I'm looking at the Extreme Outback.

Any thoughts, builds, advice? Location of installs? Pictures?

Thanks

Nick

Nick, there are a series of videos covering on board air on our website I shot the videos with George from Extreme Out. It should give you some ideas.
It would be helpful if I knew:
What vehicle you have?
What size are the tires?
When you say some air tool use, what do you mean by that?

Depending on what vehicle and engine you have, running a york compressor and a tank would handle just about all of your needs.

Best compressor for the money PUMA hands down

It does have a high start up draw though - I am wiring in a 60amp fuse in hopes that it doesn't exceed it. Certainly more than the 30amp slots my fuse block can handle.

Output is fantastic though - I've got a 10gallon tank hooked up to my Puma and 3/8" air tools can be ran off of it.

Compressor starts at 30A and shuts off at 50A. The PUMA has no duty cycle and Im going on 6 years with over 100 hours of use.

The Puma / ExtremeAire / PacBrake in the larger body compressor are all the same 3/4hp, 100% duty cycle, 4cfm free air flow unit. They've all the same specs, just Extremely different prices. If you can't fit a York, this would be my compressor of choice. The nice part about the Puma is you also get the entire bundle of accessories you will need with it- pressure switch, regulator, gauge, tank, air fitting, etc.

I've never measured it myself, but PacBrake has a graph showing 20amp at 0psi up to about 42amp peak above 100psi.

If money is no object, Oasis has a unit that is a Warn motor driving a York compressor body. It would be a red flag in the amps drawn department.

agreed. i think the 12v is 250 on buzzard gultch. i paid 190 for mine. i took the compressor off the tank and run it that way.

the whole OBA thing is way over rated, with the advent of lithium ion tools. youre not going to get a system that matches a commercial garage, you are bound by a hose. you dont get variable speed. you hog a spot on the engine and create belt complications. you cant move it to another truck.

ill take my inverter, dewalt impact, drill, grinder and sawsall over anything you will run on an suv based OBA. keep the ARB and just pack a bag of 18v tools.

you can also weld up a bracket to mount a winch motor to a york. i have one of those too. the upside, is its a tank. the down side is the weight vs volume is low due to the rpm limitation. it doesnt take full advantage of the yorks cubic inches.
