"open box" equipment buys

I don't know how many of you buy any of the open box electronics at places like circuit city. I do if its a real good deal.

Last week I picked up an open box Canon 30d for under $400 including tax.(body only), they could not find the lens, lol . photo equipment seems to go cheap at these stores, because the sales people do not have a clue about the equipment. One time I asked a sales person to see the 10-22mm lens on a camera to see how wide it goes. The salesperson could not find a camera to put it on, so he holds his arms out in a v shape and says "it would be about this wide".

Anyone else scrounge the open boxes??

I bought my Sony camera open box from Best Buy. Saved $200... got the warranty on it to cover anything that may happen for 3 or 5 years, I forget (was like $30 so totally worth it IMHO).

I am totally game for open box, as long as I can get the warranty with it.

The open box prices are set by the computer in standardized increments depending on condition. If it's not moving they'll mark it down at manager's discretion, but that usually takes a little while to happen (I work at Circuit;).)

There are some good deals, especially if the product is going out of program in combination with a display item, those are the gems :).

But like Ofrd_grl said, be certain to buy the warranty. Half the products are simply returns that look shabby in an open box, and half are items that got sent out to be serviced and may or may not have had the problem corrected.
