OR/WA: SOLV Annual beach cleanup this weekend.

SOLV is holding its annual Spring Beach Cleanup this weekend here in Oregon. It is broken down into zones: map with contact info here.

I'll be down in the Coos Bay/North Bend area. I want to check out the shipwreck that was uncovered this winter. Story here.

Along with the stern of the New Carissa resting on the North Spit, that makes two shipwrecks inside of a mile in my old hometown!

Washington storm damage

I did a trip last weekend that included kayaking off the coast at Westport, Wa, and there's a bit of clean up needed down there, too.

I drove the beach from Westport down to Tokeland, and the damage was actually in Tokeland.

Don't get me wrong, anytime you can do Washingtons coast including the Hoh Rain Forest its a bit of an adventure.

I thought about a clean up while I was there but I definitely need more than two days notice.

You said Or/Wa. Who is oraganizing Wa. and do you know if Tokeland is on the agenda?

must have been an rv park, there were about 4-5 sets of axles, and all these poles that look as if they belonged to car awnings.

I'm not sure if anyone is organizing a cleanup in WA for this weekend. I mainly ment to alert any Washingtonians living close to Oregon, (on the West side anyway,) that may want to help out.

I would like to help out if the time ever comes. Didn't mean to hijack your thread, but thought it relevant. Hope you get a decent turnout and make some good progress.


In the mid '90's I worked for Great River Outfitters in Michigan, importing and distributing Valley Kayaks (VCP at the time), Nigel Dennis Kayaks, Lendal paddles, and Palm paddling gear. I mainly use the same old Lendal Nordkapp Carbon modified crank 216 cm with a 45 degree feather that I've had for years. My spare/alternate is exactly the same but with a reinforced shaft and fused poly carbon blades that are high visibility yellow (stronger but heavier, for the rock gardens and possible bad scenarios). Both are 2 piece. I also have the bigger PowerMaster blade, and while I tend to like the bigger, larger surface area blades, over the years I've come to feal that the PowerMaster is just a little too much for any real distances.

Werner has some nice modified cranks now too. All my paddles are modified cranks; two that are custom mated to Greg Barton's wing blades for my surf skis, 3 sea kayak paddles and at least two white water paddles (I'm sure I have a few more oldies kicking around in the boat garage). All feathered the same.

Since you asked.

BTW, the boat is a NDK Romany Explorer HV. What about your kit? Are you currently paddle shopping or just curious?

My kit is down to a pair of Werner paddles: Wenatchee and San Juan. I haven't been in a kayak in years.

I've known the folks at Werner since I was a kid though, so I'm always curious as to who is using their gear. My Pop installed the "new" Bell phone system in Werner Sr.'s house back in the late 60s, early 70s and became friends with the family. My first time in a kayak was in the front seat of one of their home-made two seaters down near the Mukilteo Ferry. Their garage perpetually smelled of fiberglass!

I know Fuhrer Werner (sp?) and he and his family are the genuine article, you're right. Great people, and still a good company to work for.
