Organized, lightweight tool kits on GL Auctions

I was wondering around on the GovLiquidation site (heard that one before?) and found this auction for some cool tool kits:

2 ea Aircraft maintenance tool kit, P/ N: SC5180-99-B01, Consist of but not limited to: screw drivers, sockets, wrenches, pliers, and wire cutters

Looks like they would be nice and light, and well organized. I like having a place for everything so that you can easily tell if you left a tool on the ground or in the engine bay...

As you will notice from the link, there are three separate auctions, for two tool kits each.

Starting bid $150.00

Auction Starts 05/20

Location is Oklahoma City

No connection, yadda yadda, just thought I'd pass it along. Finder's fee gladly accepted. Buy two and give one to me.

ADDED: In case you aren't familiar with GL auctions, beware:

BUYER'S PREMIUM: ( top )

1. We charge a buyer's premium of 10% of the bid amount on all purchases. The buyer's premium is considered a taxable amount, and will be taxed at the appropriate rate depending on the location of the property. Buyer's premiums are standard in the auction industry, and should be factored into your bidding strategy.

Very interesting, it's pretty confusing on how to use the site just like anything government related. Thanks for sharing the information.

GL is a private company that has a contract to run on-line auctions of government property. You have to pre-register, and there are a few hoops to jump through (especially on sensitive items) but the kicker is you have to arrange your own pickup and shipping...

Not too bad if you can go pick it up. Really sucks if you bid on something in Guam.

And make sure you understand the 'buyer's premium' that they add on to the sale... Not a good surprise, if you didn't plan for it.

Any link/info to this "'buyer's premium'"? Looks like it's not a straight forward deal.

**NOT LIGHTWEIGHT**

I don't know where you/they got that from! I have one of these kits (not this EXACT same one, but very VERY close), and I dread it every time I have to pick it up! These suckers are heavy!

I think they are talking about the styrofoam inserts. :wings:

You are right. I have never seen one of these first-hand, and assumed from the pix that they had fairly light-weight plastic cases and styrofoam inserts, so would be considerably lighter than the same tools in a metal tool box, or even a plastic one with equivalent dividers.

'Course, you know what happens when you assume... :p

BTW, I tried to edit the title to correct my typo, and it doesn't seem to take... Sory aboot dat.

I would much rather do that kit myself ( I know I have dedicated tools for my truck ) using a Pelican case and some Harbor Freight tool organizer

Yeah. The weight of two of them is around 150lbs (per the website, that probably includes the pallet) so the weight of each case is probably around 70lbs.

These are what the AF calls CTK's - controlled tool kits. There are CTK's for various aircraft types and jobs (a tool that isn't needed on a B52 won't be in a B52 CTK, etc). There may be specialized tools for an aircraft (tri-wing screwdrivers for KC-10's, for example).

There is a foam liner with cutout for each and every tool, and before the mechanic leaves the airplane he's supposed to visually confirm that EVERY SINGLE tool is back in it's slot...and not left in the airplane somewhere. And when the CTK is turned in at the end of the day it's supposed to be inspected again by a supervisor, again to make sure all the parts are there and not jamming a bell-crank somewhere.

The tools are a mixed bag: Some will be very good quality, some will be barely tolerable (lowest bidder). Some might be missing.

Most of the tools in my kit are S-K Hand Tools with other assorted name brand items like Vise-Grips, Robo-Grips, and Crescent mixed in. I'd say high quality - but not exactly Snap-On...

Thanks for the info. Let's see how much hoops I need to jump through to get this. I'm thinking cherry pick from the kit to build a tool kit that stays in the tuck full time.
