Our Time In Northern Wisconsin - 4 Day Trip

Northern Wisconsin had been on my radar for a while, and early October seemed like the perfect time to explore its remote beauty. There were two main reasons that drew me to the area for a weekend trip: the stunning fall colors and the abundance of National Forest land. The vast network of gravel roads and small campgrounds tucked deep into the forest made it ideal for a vehicle-supported adventure.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Early October meant peak fall colors, and the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows didn’t disappoint. With temperatures hovering between 50 and 60 degrees, the weather was just cool enough to enjoy the crisp air without feeling uncomfortable during the day or night.

I set out expecting to capture some breathtaking landscapes, and the experience was exactly that—amazing. Every turn on those gravel roads revealed something new, from quiet lakes framed by fiery treetops to secluded campsites where I could relax and take in the serene beauty of the forest.

One of the best things about exploring Northern Wisconsin is the freedom and flexibility that comes with a vehicle-supported trip. With endless gravel roads winding through the National Forests, you can spend your days driving through stunning, remote areas, and your nights camping at a different campground each evening.

The beauty of this region lies in its variety of small, secluded campsites scattered across the forests. You can easily set up camp at a new spot each night, allowing you to experience different parts of the landscape without being tied to a single location. The gravel roads are well-maintained yet rugged enough to give you a sense of adventure as you navigate through dense forests, alongside quiet lakes, and over rolling hills.

This approach lets you truly immerse yourself in the area, taking the time to explore hidden gems along the way—whether it’s an unexpected clearing with a panoramic view or a peaceful lakeside spot perfect for a lunch break. Each day becomes a new journey, with the flexibility to follow whatever road or trail captures your curiosity.

For those looking to explore Northern Wisconsin at their own pace, I’d highly recommend this style of overlanding. It’s the perfect way to connect with the landscape and enjoy the thrill of the open road, while still having the comfort of your truck and gear at your side.

Colors have been spectacular this year. But, we are past our peak. Just oaks mainly holding leaves now.

Looks like an enjoyable, relaxing road trip.

I live down near the Chicago area and we haven't had any good colors this year. It's been pretty warm and really dry so conditions haven't been the best. I'm just glad I can make the quick drive up to Wisconsin and see some colors...fall is my favorite time of year.
