What's special about this one? It's fine by me, but I'm curious.
Don't know what to tell you about those files. ????

Since I'm lazy, any repeaters in the area that we can hit?

No idea, that freq just seems to be one people use. Don't know why. I'm so new to this HAM stuff, maybe I should stick with bacon. yum, bacon.

Don't know why the files won't work either. I've never played with MapSource but I plugged in the coordinates and there are a few ways in. You guys are taking off from Empire Ranch on bikes, si? Or are you heading in off of 82? Or ar eyou being dropped off, then the drivers are heading in off 82?

Maybe you can email me a .pdf of the route in map form? jeffryscott at mac dot com ...

Jeff, I can't open the files either....and the text file is scaring me. That is alot of waypoints to punch in manually. I might have time tomorrow to move all 5 MILLION of them. :mixed-smiley-030:

Or, I could go for a ride instead.....:punk03:

Oh, I gotta go pick up my new laptop too....and dump the appropriate programs onto it (lightroom, Ozi, etc).

Whew, glad it's not just me. Found camp, found the quick route in off of 82. Might do that, get set up then go explore.

What time are you thinking you might head out after breakfast? If it works, maybe we can wander in the desert searching together ...

That is the national simplex calling frequency according to the band plan. It's sort of analogous to CH 19 on the CB, it's the one people use to make contact, then they go to another frequency. I'd suggest using another frequency.

For an EXPEDITION website . . . never mind, I'll keep that comment to myself ;)

Perhaps I'm "Sofa King Re Todd Did". The route tool does make an anchor point with every click, but I wanted an accurate route. When I created it, it didn't actually list those 5 MILLION as "official" waypoints. Don't tell the guys at JPFreek about this, cuz I just wrote an article about GPS use . . . :bigbossHL: How about an Expedition Trophy class, or um...symposium, on mapping and GPS software???

My plan is to embark by pedal from Empire Ranch, follow the road east/ne to Mattie Canyon (powerlines are in the canyon). The canyon is cool. Climb out towards Ramsey Well and on to camp. I figured those driving would take the same route, and leave before those of us pedaling - EWW icky dust.

BTW: I told Brooke that my waypoint for camp is precisely where we camped before, but if she finds a better location before getting there to take it.
2M frequency shall be the infamous "Party Channel" 146.460 This is to avoid confusion, chaos and mayhem that Jeff likes to start :). Thanks Chuck. Brooke is not licensed either, and since I won't be in the truck to be "in control of my station," she won't be able to transmit unless there's an emergency. SO! If you roll in from Hwy 82, and no one is at the campsite marked, just follow the road westward toward Ramsey Well. I'll have a handheld on me too, so we should be able to communicate very well.

You boys are smart and adventurous. My apologies for the map files. Jeff, as you suggested, here is a map: http://www.markdstephens.com/las_cienegas_conservation/main_map.jpg

Saturday: Abundant sunshine. Highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 50s.

Look'n good ladies, look'n good. Especially since it's supposed to be 96 in the valley. :Wow1:

Is there ground fall we can burn, or will we have to bring wood for sure? I maybe be able to scrounge up something other than the Cirkle K match sticks they sell, let me know.
