I dont have any pictures but I hammock whenever possible. If I don't NEED to bring my tent (someone with me does not have a hammock or wants to sleep in a tent) I use one of my two hammocks. I have one Lawson hammock. I got this for one of my trips that I could not always rely on there being trees, also because it has a built in bug net. It is pretty much a suspended tent. Uses 2 spreader bars and two short poles to hold a bug net up. Because of the poles it will also work as a 1man tent. If it is going to be warm with no chance of rain/bug...or if I can sleeping in my jeep I use a paracord hammock I made.

I did just invest in a new hammock, called the adventures hammock. It has a built in sleeping pad sleeve which was really what got me interested. The pillow pocket was another plus, as was the fact that it can completely zip up like a sleeping bag to retain heat.

I think I am going to try to build a setup that can go off my rig somehow and support the 4 of us ? have some ideas in my head just for those times no trees etc...
sadly no welder or welding skills so will have to have it made
maybe good project to learn some stuff on and play and get new toys :) ahhahahaha

I really like the idea of hammocks, but I keeep thinking my portaledge would be an easier set up, especially when car camping. It would be real easy to hang of a roof rack bar or a single tree.

What kind of rig? Do you have a roof rack and a trailer hitch? If so I have something pretty simple in mind that could make it fairly easy

yeah FJC with gobi rack and hitch also

plan on a 4 runner this year sometime ? but will have some kinda rack might go with a baja this time around
thing is has to hang 4 :)

kinda thought about half on the ground using 12 foot span with two 6 foot pieces almost open ended triangle shape that would slide together and pin so on the rear of the roof rack one bar for each side going out with long bar also in the rear this way we could hang one on each side and bunk the kids on the back bar ? tarp it and have access to the rear

in a single tree I have hung off the roof rack and the bumper (arg front bumper)
so have also thought have a large single center pole with welded loops at set height then come up with a single bar back to the bumper since quite a bit of tension is in as much as down and just a way to stabilize it ? like a simple tripod style thing

but always open to ideas and thoughts :) nice thing for setup even if it say took ten minutes to link the hammocks would go up in minutes since the hang would be the same all the time

ya know I had wondered about those :) no idea since I never used them but the hammock thing is so nice on my back
not sure if those are more like a tramp kinda sleep (as in catamaran tramp) and not as hammocky like ?

I know my single hammock setups up in under 2 minutes
once I start using a under quilt ? sure that will go to about 3 minutes ?

Wish I had some pics still of this old hammock I made out of 3/8 inch rope. It was more comfortable than it sounds. I used it whenever my family would go on a road trip to livestock shows as exhibitors. The barns almost always had a place for me to hang it. Plus, because it was made heavy duty, it doubled as a cargo net. Great for storing bedding out of the way during the day with the crowds coming in.

I wonder if my current cargo net would make a good hammock?

I would make a giant t shaped pieces that would break down for transport. Slide it in your receiver and have it sit back from the rear maybe 18" or so, rise straight up to a tee, couple feet each direction. Have 2 welded loops on each side. On the front of your rack have a bar that mounts perpendicular to the vehicle as far forward as you can. Again with 2 loops per side. You can attach the hammocks 2 per side of your fjc from the front to the back anywhere. With a known length you can make quick connect cables that will give you the perfect angles every time.

thanks :)

I wanted to have something I could open and use my rear doors with to :)

and I often have something in my hitch though ?
I see where you are going with it though :)
transport idea of breaking down for sure I thought about 12 foot spread so even pieces 6 foot could work that could join together

one idea I had and it could work was swing set pieces ? you can get the top corners for commercial playgrounds if I got a top bar that came back to the roof rack for the ridge line rigidity and then two other bars going down to the ground for back and forth and make one leg adjustable somehow ? that could work I had thought and act as a way to have two hooks on each bar and bunk the cots ?
I want to make it quick enough and not to heavy also :)

some folks on the hammock forum are using tent structure pieces with I think about 1 inch to 1.5 diameter piping ?

my problem is no engineer on structures of steel ? so not always up on what can be done with it as far as dis needed etc.....

I also like the idea of post #25 here old post but cool idea BUT wife and kids and I kinda wanted to be on one side if we could ? then again in a pinch it would work
just have to get a hole in the arb on each side and get a custom rear for bars like that ?
one thing about that design would be easy to setup and nothing has to touch the ground so no leveling other than the truck which is nice

as it is now I can go from my top rack on front and my arb bumper to a single tree with 4 hammocks ? the two on bumper hang a bit low but works in a pinch

what I really wanted was a %100 no tree needed :) self standing but using the truck as a single side and be able to use my doors have to sketch some ideas :)

You could assemble something that you drove onto. Like a big l shaped piece. The truck would be the counter weight to keep it upright. Some 1" steel square tubing would be more than enough. Or have it stake into the ground with 2 supports to stop from pulling you back to the truck. It would be like making your own tree

Glad you brought this back up.

Just got an ENO hammock today on discount at REI.

Planning on trying to hang one end of the of the bed rack and coming up with some sort of post that is supported with guy lines off to the side. Saw a post where a guy used a hi-lift standing on end that that had guy lines going out to support it. Might try something like that.

I've considers a Dutch oven tripod. Just don't know if it would work since it is not designed for that direction of force.

some folk son the hammock forum have made things for single out of various types that fold and pack away my issue is hanging 4 of us :)

the truck end is stable its the end furthest away :) in some ways the one half a play set idea might be easy fast and cheaper that way ?

more I think the idea of that earlier post with bars coming out of the bumpers is cool thought that when I first saw it :)
since its more a when we don't have trees kinda thing would only need to store 4 poles and would be super quick to get up and going
