Both. Patches and point releases will be free. Major releases will have upgrade pricing.

Ok. I'll probably purchase within a few days.

Can the software follow a path? ie when a path is loaded, will it tell you which direction to go, how far you are off, etc?

It acts like a typical handheld GPS unit. That is, it doesn't follow a GPS "track" but it does display the track and your location.

It will have GoTo waypoint and follow a GPX "route" in a future release. A "route" is a series of discrete waypoints that roughly define a route.

Sorry for all the questions. I'd PM you but I figure others might have the same questions.

Any idea how much upgrades will cost for new releases?

Only patches and the next point release are on the roadmap right now. Both of those will be free upgrades. There will be *at least* one more point release after the one on the roadmap before I even begin looking at another major release.

The upgrade to the next major release, when it is ready, will most likely be 60% of the recommended retail price.

Right now, all enhancements on the current roadmap are planned as free upgrades to existing customers. I value and appreciate those that are supporting this young product and fully intend to treat them well.

What is the purpose of this when you can cache Google Earth aerial imagery and have much higher res, and also roads and some trails?

USGS Topo maps are only available at 1:24k, 1:100k, and 1:250k. When the satellite imagery map-pack is installed along with one or more state/regional map-packs the user gets additional zoom levels at smaller scales. The additional zoom levels are useful for a variety of things such as:

- Displaying a long route
- Panning cross state, country, etc
- Viewing tracks that are outside an area where you have map-packs.

The maps that Google Earth caches aren't compatible with Overland Navigator. Downloading Google maps for use in other applications is a violation of their license agreement.

Google Earth itself is a great desktop application, and one that I use frequently on my own desktop. In the field, I wanted to create a product that was easier to use. Bigger buttons, touchscreen/keyboard control friendly, simpler, and focused on in-field use-cases.

Ok, so I installed everything and it worked great for a couple of times. Now when I open it the screen has the touch buttons, but no map, just a blank black screen.

What did I do?

While I don't know for sure, I would guess that you panned outside of the area where you have maps installed. This is one of those cases where the satellite maps are really useful since you have a map to look at no matter where you are on the globe.

Try going outside with the GPS plugged in and press the "GPS" button. Assuming you have maps for your current location it will snap you back to your current location.

Just got mine

Received my copy of Overland Navigator and my SoCal and AZ maps a few days ago. Got the USB GPS Puck today. Had a few minutes to play around with it. Very cool!!!

I am very much looking forward to having the ability to edit the waypoints from within the software. I have tried pulling them into EasyGPS and editing the name or the comment, but when I save them and bring them back into Overland Navigator I just get a gray blob with no text. It would be great to be able to name and comment each waypoint on the fly. The "goto" feature would be nice too.

It's a great supplement to a bag full of paper maps. I mainly want to use it to document trips, creating waypoints with comments along the way, while creating a track log.

I will give it a proper test this weekend.

Gabe,

I suspect that you have the wrong default Waypoint Display Mode set. Send me an email with a GPX file from EasyGPS and we'll see if we can get something workable for you. support@spatialminds.com

Garmin Mapsource works very well as an editor. Overland Navigator supports many of the Garmin GPX extensions and can represent all of the Garmin waypoint symbols.

I agree, editing waypoints is very important and it is on the near term product roadmap.

2.0.1 - patch release w/ bugfixes and basic Search and Rescue support such as APRS station display and UTM coordinates.

2.1 - Waypoint editing is the most important feature.

Craig,

I didn't even think of Mapsource, I have a copy of it around here somewhere. I stopped using it when the new computers I got don't have "real" serial ports :ylsmoke: I have an old Garmin 76s. I guess I could break down and get a serial to usb adapter?

Thanks again.

I was just suggesting that you use mapsource to create/edit the GPX files. No need to use the old Garmin GPS if you purchased something nicer/newer such as the $36 Globalstat BU-353 USB GPS.

- Open Mapsource
- File->Open and select your GPX track or create a new track
- When you are done editing/creating your GPX track select "SAVE AS"
- Select GPX as the file format to save in and save it to your Overland Navigator "Tracks" directory.

** You don't even have to quit Overland Navigator to do this. Overland Navigator will automatically detect new or updated GPX files and display the changes.

This setup works really well for geocache challenge events. You can edit a single GPX file and both save it locally for Overland Navigator and easily transfer it to a handheld GPS. Use Overland Navigator to get the truck close using a big screen and big map, then jump out of the truck with the handheld to go those last couple of feet.
