I have a semblance of an idea about the big amount of time (and complexity) it would take to write a new map/nav map system. Having said that it sure would be nice to know if Overland Nav for IOS is weeks, months or maybe even years out.

I exchanged emails with Craig a few weeks ago. He was wrapping up a consulting gig, and was about to turn back to the ON for IOS. Unfortuantely, he had some issues with the map processing that set him back. I still think it will be well worth the wait. Now, I am considering going the iPad mini route. The full iPad mounted in my TJ is a tad big.

I can understand what you mean. I have tried my iPad both in my JK and in my FusoFM260. In the Jeep, the dash space and height makes the iPad a poor choice [too obtrusive], but it is heaven in my Fuso. Pic below. In the latter, I have so much room and such a low dash level that I can easily mount it well below any critical visual lane, and yet benefit from the large screen. [Bear in mind that when in the drivers seat the angle of view to the iPad is MUCH lower than in the enclosed pic which was taken from the pass through to the house. The iPad is visually completely below any needed view of the road or outside objects.]

Just bumping this thread in hopes of getting a reply to this question... I know it'll be worth the wait, but a general time frame estimate would sure be nice to have!

Boy... really sorry guys. This isn't very professional, but the truth is I've had some things happen in my personal life that have interfered with this project. Those issues are finally being resolved and I'm making progress again.
I think I'm going to develop this version following an Agile and Lean Startup model. What that means is that I'm going to try and get a minimum viable product done as soon as possible. Get it into the App Store, then add additional features a few at a time with regular updates. This means that the initial version will not have all of the features in the Windows version, but it will over time.
The old version was targeted at the US only and used a map-projection that was only suitable for maps being displayed in the mid-latitudes. The new version will be designed to support maps for the entire world. I've spent considerable time getting to know OS X and iOS over the past few months and am really excited about the design I have in my head. Next up is a wireframe mockup. I may post a link to that and solicit your input.
The really good news is that the initial set of USGS Topo maps is compiled for the new version. Compiling the maps is *by far* the most time consuming part of the app development. Overland Navigator maps are not just raw, unverified, monstrously large USGS maps available on the internet. To put this in perspective, Washington State has over 1800 maps that I manually re-projected, compressed, verified it was in the right location, and that it seamlessly edge matched with it's neighbors. That work is done for the continental US. Canada and Alaska will be done once the software has been released.
You guys have every right to be frustrated with me and I sincerely apologize for not replying on here sooner. I haven't been on ExPo for many months and was no longer receiving email notifications that you guys were replying.
Finally, the TDI is going into my truck this week, so I'll be back on the road for the first time in over a year. There is no better motivation for me than needing the system myself. All I own at this point is an iPad.

Let's get together sometime, have a beer, and see what's up. I'm only an hour north of you and regularly head down your way. Installation *should be* very straight forward. At least that was the goal when I put all of this together. If it's not, then I consider it a bug and will do what I can to improve the process.

Craig, you know I've got your back. You've got a great product. After using your software for a while, and having to deal with sourcing topo for my Iphone for my trips this year in Guatemala and Africa, I have some very updated and specific ideas on what's needed that doesn't exist for a global overland traveler.
P.S. I've had to load Navigator to my carpc several times, and the loading generally goes reasonably well. For some reason, my navigator only reads the sat imagery and not the topos, even though they are in the same folders. I'll have to contact you offline to resolve. There's still nothing else out there that really checks the block with the carpc arena for topo.

BTW, TDI install after a year-very exciting. I know what that feels like. I had to drive a rented purple PT cruiser for 6 months waiting on my TDI conversion. Almost killed myself.

Wouldn't it be great if you could use your Ipad as a display when you put your FUSO in reverse? In other words, reverse would turn on your rear view camera that would open an APP that would automatically display what was behind you. That would eliminate one of the displays you currently have on your dash. So far I don't think there is any way to use live video input on an iPad. Bummer.
