The last 1/2 mile or so of the trail is fairly technical so many vehicles will stop short and folks will hike in to the mission. There are some photos of the trail here. We need to get a report from Al on what the current conditions are like.

I hiked that last bit when I was there in '03. It is pretty technical but fine for a truck with a locker and some driving skills. I also did not want to drive through that spring. Natural springs are such a scarce commodity down there there I didn't want to see it degraded more.

I can't believe it was 2003 when we were there. It's the last mile & a half that most folks pass on. I used sliders, skid plates & rear locker for the run, otherwise my Taco is pretty stock. The lower portion hasn't improved since 03. The track from Rancho Santa Inez has deteriorated quite a bit since then (erosion). There are maybe half a dozen spots that I would class as a solid 3. The last portion a solid 3+. Didn't get any pics, have to see if others got any.

Graham and I finally got back last night. I had a great time (and no Chris I didn't suffer from testosterone poisoning :sombrero I probably would have preferred it if there had been a few more girls along, but I rarely thought about it actually. A fine group of gentlemen!

On a side note; we stopped to see the sight for the 2010 Overland Exposition, Wow! Beautiful spot. The two on sight restaurants look awesome, and the people at the facility were really friendly.

Glad to hear it's still challenging. I'd like to go back and do it again, and hike down the canyon beyond the mission.

Chris,

I did part of that back in 1997. Wonderful hike, a lot of the old El Camino Real from there over to Gonzaga Bay has been wiped out by erosion & rock slides. You still might be able to use a lower trail in the bottom of the canyon, but would require boulder hopping & or some deep water crossing. When are we going?
