Markus,

Something to consider re: led headlights.

As I understand it, the LED headlights may not generate enough heat to effectively melt any ice/snow buildup. Not such a big concern for me in the Vancouver, BC area but if you get a great deal of snow where you are it may become an issue for you.

Thanks, heard of this theoretical problem too, but non of the users I know reported such problems in reality. In addition it is more than ten years ago that I drove longer distances in real winter conditions, as since some years winter became more or less "rain and mud season" here.

My Overland 99 XJ

I do field environmental work in austere conditions, and do as much camping as possible....always using my Jeep. I've owned my XJ since 2002 when I lived in Panama. I also use my XJ as a daily driver. It has 287,000 miles on it, everything works perfectly on it still! Even though we have a 2011 JK Unlimited 70th anniversary, the XJ is the proven expedition vehicle, and the one we take on arduous trips.

There is room for the "soft gear" (sleeping bags, duffels, etc.) and tools/spares inside. The bulkhead is right where the the little bulkhead under the rear seat would be.

That trip was just me and the dog for 5 days so I had plenty of room left over. It is also my daily driver and goes down the road at any legal speed plus a little. When I drove it to and from the Rubicon from Washington, it got 17 to 19 mpg.

Here is is last weekend in "snow mode":

and here is a useful feature that I didn't see coming. It was snowing so hard the we kept losing sight of one another. I flipped on my rearward facing LED lightbar (just 18W for camp area lighting) and I could be seen from a much farther distance than just the tail lights.

Here is my 2001 Sport overland build in progress that I started when I bought it completely stock a few months ago:

- RE 3.5" Super-Flex with Monotube shocks (Bilstein's badged as RE)
- 31" BFG AT tires (my only real regret so far but I didn't know any better at the time)
- Whynter 45qt fridge + cover (you'd think their own cover would have the foot holes in the right spots)
- Yakima gutter mounts, crossbars and Loadwarrior rack with the extension
- 50" LED light bar (Amazon special) with Hooligan Off Road mounts
- knucklebone hitch mounted tire and jerry can holders from Detours Off Road Hardware (Jerry can carrier was a custom build but he plans to offer it for sale)
- custom built storage box for the rear

Accessories:
- secondary accessory deep cycle battery (standalone)
- Renogy 100W Solar suitcase
- Viair 90P compressor
- ARB tire plug kit
- Hilift jack
- assortment of recover gear - straps, chains, shackles, axe, saw, shovel etc
- lots of other "crap"

Coming soon(ish):
- Foxwing awning (should get here tomorrow), am going to have to jerry-rig something up to stop the hatch going up so high, thinking some kind of strap that is easy to connect and disconnects needed
- Frame stiffeners and sliders, already on order from Detours
- front and rear backbone bumpers from Detours that use the original bumper skins
- reverse lights (after tinting it can be a bit tought seeing out the back in dark parking lots and the like)
- winch, I could cheap out on this sooner but would rather save for a Warn with synthetic rope
- Maxtrax
- Trasharoo
- Cb Radio + antenna

On the wish list:
- ARB front & rear lockers
- snorkel (would have to do it properly and breathe all that needs it unlike most builds I see where they just do the air box)

On to photos:
