Overlanding Tires

Um.... No? Not since the Internet was invented. Tires are not a casual impulse buy. Most people have to budget and save for them, and have plenty of time to think seriously about the specific attributes that are important to them, do the reasearch, and buy accordingly.

One would hope anyway. I can see it going either way...

I really like my Yokohama Geolanders A/T-S. It's pretty rocky out here and I've never had a problem with tears or any damage really. They've done pretty decent in the snow that I've had it in and they're no louder than the Hanooks the Jeep came with when i bought it.

+1 for the Geolanders A/T-S

The first tire I bought for my Montero before the lift and had no complaints about them other than I wanted a taller tire after the lift. I'm looking for another set of stock wheels to put the ones I took off for an extra set to have.

I think for my "Overlanding" needs, a 285/70R17 (load range D) tire will do me good. Probably stick with the tried-and-tested BFG AT.

Has to be between Yokohama Geolander A/T-S or Cooper DISCOVERER STT. I know the Cooper is not ideal, but it did the jobs I need it to do and the last set lasted 55K! :smiley_drive:

Seriously, don't most folks buy what the local vendor pushes? Then come on a forum and try to tell others how smart their purchase was? Human nature.

Lots of good tires out there.

Nope never did, I find what I like and then tell them what I will pay and to get them or I'll go elsewhere. Of course I also managed tire shops back in the day so I know their "sales talk BS"

Dynapro ATM did FANTASTIC over 9 days in muck and wet as we circumnavigated the Black Hills with rain every day. Super quiet on the highway, do very well in the snow (but no mistaking them for proper snow tires), track amazingly well in the rain, and are fairly cheap. I honestly think they are what the BFG AT used to be; a damn good affordable AT tire... but the ATM isn't iffy in the mud/snow ;-).

Hello guys. I'm looking for some help with people's experience. Looking for new tires for our new xj in 31x10.5x15 flavor.
This jeep is daily driven in southern Cali. Through desert sand, rock, mud & snow. We try to trade dirt whenever possible & there's alot of really soft sand out here? As well as mild rocks and sheet/slate rock. So looking for a well rounded tire without it being a full on mud terrain.

I'm looking at
cooper at3s,
Mastercraft axt (cooper off brand? Cheaper practically the same form what I've read??? Speculate?)
firestone destination AT's.

Also looking at the cooper st/maxx & hankook dyanpro mts.

I've run bfg loyaly in the past without much issues. Always loved them, but now decided there may be something better out there for cheaper or even the same cost. I love how aggressive the shoulder of the bfg AT's is & they've done extremely well for everything I've gone through. Yes ive searched this thread as well as comparing others online.

What's people's personal experience with each and maybe recommend a tire for me?

I ran the BFG AT on my first XJ, and absolutely loved them. They were the best AT tire option... in 98. I will never knock the tread, but their price has exceeded their worth imho with iffy mud and snow traction. I had a set of Firestone Destination ATs on the CRD before the lift. I had no issues at all with them in the snow and sandy/slick mud. They do cake up like any good MT, but with some decent driving skill, there isn't an issue. The Dynapro ATM did a bit better with the mud and snow on the same truck (though different size). They tend to shed off the muck a bit better than my Destinations did before. The muck of the badlands (think sticky toothpaste) did pack into the tread and hang on, but I was still able to grab enough traction to drag the loaded truck and military trailer out of holes. I can't speak of the others but...

If money was no object I may go with a set of BFG AT KOs, despite their tendency to not shed muck and snow as well.. they are a fantastic tire with a GREAT history. For the lower priced rubber, the ATM all the way (IMHO).

Looks like they may have finally figured out the the water, slush, etc has to actually be allowed to squeeze out the sides of the contact patch. Still, from the look I'll keep my dura-tracs for all the winter driving i do or perhaps go back to the silent armor kevlars that are a great AT tire that also evacuates well.

Give u the rundown and my reviews. All tires used on landscaping trucks (that see off road trail time to). 1500, 2500, 3500 silverado's and f350, with plows hauling loaded 20' trailers .... (1500)Cooper St 285's "load E"- great tire for everyday beatings.. Snow traction (can be studded)good until it gets icy, got 65k miles out of them (then let a friend have two of them and he put another 8k on them).. great in rain no hydro plane. only got buried in the deep snow when the frame got up on a thick snow bank. Drove them on stone roads and don't pic up much rock. sand they do ok but dig unless u air down. City street drone got loud after 40000 miles but sounded good. Overall I would buy them in heart beat any day. Moab, telluride, and Toledo and several cross country trips with them.. Heavy but not to heavy..Lost 1-2 mpg's overall. (2500& f 350) Goodyear Duratracs 285's "load E" (1st set on ford)(gm 2nd set get about 45k out of them) (HAS A FULL DUMP BED INSERT)City street drone gets loud at 30-50 mph. wet weather watch out for the tar on the streets you will slide and u won't stop!!. Snow traction great, rips the mud up just as well, never been stuck, just hit the hammer and they dig. sand they dig quick so air down. side lugs help dig as well. pulled out a couple huge screws and no punctures strong sidewalls. very heavy tire , about 3-4 mpg's lost. (1500) Pro comp xtm "load e" 285's used primarily out in Colorado./ moab.. Great snow tire, suck when it gets icy. No hydroplane, great over washboard just hit the pedal and go. rock crawling they r super sticky when aired down, got buried plenty of times 600" snow year. Road noise not to loud 30-50 mph's, heavy tire lost 3-4 mpg's 40k on them . (3500) "load e" 265's Michelin at2 throw every little rock or pebble imaginable at your rig. great handling in rain and sand, not for gravel roads at all. not the best in any type of mud they get slick. Packed hard street snow and ice they are slick.(i thought they were reviewed as one of the better winter tires but they are NOT!!. no noise very smooth ride. great gas mpg's no complaints but definitely not like the other tires above... WILL NOT BUY AGAIN unless only on a street dweller.. came with the new truck

bfg at... Lot of people have them cause u can get em at box stores.. wait till u blow your sidewalls or loose your tread.. had several friends use them and had more hate and repair or warranty.. one set delammed and almost killed my buddie.. wrecked his truck.. most say sidewalls are to sloppy.. but they do get semi good traction until they gum up with mud..

nitto terra Crap not a good tire at all, unless u only play dress up and buy big rims and street dwell with your rig ... not a deep tread pattern, no good in rain, snow, sleet, mud,,, get my drift. don't last 25k before they are rendered useless.

Nice write up Matt. I agree with you on the Coopers, and mostly agree about the Nitto Terra Grapplers, but disagree about their rain performance. On my LR3 the Nitto's were awesome in the rain. However, they were totally thrashed after 30k of off roading.

I concur, I ran my nittos for about 30k and they did great in anything but mud, although mine lasted substantially longer and had plenty of life left when I switched to KM2's.
