WELL!!!!!!!!!! We left...
DSCN2130-rs.jpg

But I will say from the get go here: We returned with our tail between our legs... And me, well I'm just sad

I will say though, the Toyota ran flawlessly. The little 22RE with 4.10's pulled up hills (yeah it was would up but hey...) at 60 even on the biggest grades, some I even held 70. It really made me feel like it was unstopable, although it was a bit top heavy, and needs new tires HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

I kept thinking though about an old guy I met at a Phish show years ago. He said : "whatever you do man... don't lose your shoes man..." Read on to find out why a good pair of shoes can really make or break your experience ;)

So we also took along our new traveling companion: THE MOOSE!!!!!
DSCN2118-rs.jpg

We made it to Prineville and to this AMAZING camp site outside of town near Stein's (or as it should be spelled Steen...) Pillar off Hwy 26 near Wildcat campground in Central/Eastern OR
DSCN2134-rs.jpg

Had some amazing tucka: Ramen, Corn, Pea's, and Terryaki chicken. with some Pacifico and Kokanee to wash it down ;)
DSCN2137-rs.jpg

Then on the way out this morning, we randomly stoped for a view point and what do I hear...

HSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Oh crap. AND it's exactly as I suspected... I've got a flat. No doubt I got it turning around to get out of the spot we were in as there was alot of metal left from some pretty lame previous guests (we took alot but apprently not enough ;) eh )
DSCN2154-rs.jpg

Luckily I have multiple jacks, of various types, a good spare and my tool kit (yeah I know you'd assume I'd have that but belive me I've forgotten it before :D )so on it went and back to Prineville and Les Schwabb.
Yeah I was getting a bit sick of it all right now...
DSCN2163-rs.jpg

Now what I didn't know at the time was how baddly I had punctured the tire. I looked, but I didn't really fiddle with it enough to get a sence of how shot it was. Well when they got it out adn cleaned, it was a y shaped three-corner tear (each length of the cut was about 1-1.5" each) that was not going to be repairable...

Now I've been needing new tires for awhile and frankly I was so ready to go on this trip that I about plunked down all the dough for new tires in my desired 33x9.5/10.5 but alas all they had were Toyo Open Country's in 33x10.5 and they were 235 a tire... Now I don't like the Toyo At's to begin with, but at 235 a tire I was really not having it. So the guy starts trying to talk me into some "32X12.50's, they'll go real nice on that truck. make it look tough and wider..." And here's the part where I stop him and then decide not to have a pohilosophical argument over his (IMO) rediculous advice... I was however able to pick out wich of the many 4wd's was his in the lot... The one with the 31X13.50 (or something) Thornturds... Oh and flames and chrome wheel flares... Interesting. I buy a 31x1.50 cheepie to get me home and maybe be a trailer spare in the future, but one thing's for certain... Now my Diffs and Tires will be getting addresses: 33x9.5/10.5 plus F/R LSD's here I come!!!!!!!!

It's about this time that another guy from the Schwabbe comes up and ask's me about my Marlin rear-bumper... Or as my GF calls it, I "pick up yet another guy" HAHAHAHAHAHA So we talk for awhile and turns out he's got an 85 Runner, Dual Cases, 4Link, 38's etc and another older 83 P/U that's built a little less extremely sitting on 36's with duals as well... So I've got a new wheeling buddy and a Crawler to take out in a few weeks when I head back out there... All in all not a complete loss.

So all of this leads to: Me coming home after night one. We've already got a plan to leave in 5 weeks on another attempt of the same trip. I thinkk actually it'll be nicere to go in the hot season as it was pretty stormy and the roads in and around the Owyhee are GNARLY when wet.

So anyway, with my 5-day weekends every other week I have all sorts of time off. So WHit will go back to work Monday (BOOOOOOOO) and save her Vac. time and we're going to go back and try again in 5 weeks. By that time I hope to have new tires and re-gear/LSD the truck.

Anywho: here are some pics of what we DID get to see... Actually we didn't get to see as much as I've liked... Hmmmm

She was a bit top heavy... I would have like to have had the LSD's here. The pine needles are like marbles on glass.

Getting out of town, the "Super Turtle" chugged righton up 26 from Silent Rock to Govvy at a nice comfortable 65mph. Not bad for a loaded down rig with a 4-Banger... Go Toyota go.

This is the little Creek we camped on. It had a neat little trail outlined with rocks leading to this little beach and soaking hole. I can imagine this is AWESOME when it's nice and hot in the middle of the summer. AS it was WHIT had a great place to wash off in the morning. In hindsight, I think she may have skipped the "brisk experience" if she knew we were going to be back home... But hey, she was a trooper for all of this and even helped change the tire. Great woman that one.

This is our sleeping arangment: an old Futon folded in half (while driving) folds out adn makes a SWEET bed in the back of the Runner. Add my E-Tarp to the opening and it's pretty much a 4 seasons shelter. It weas real nice all by myself sleeping in Govvy this winter.

Oh and she made me that amazing Tucka' too eh ;)

Ha! It's not an adventure until something goes wrong!
We had a family trip go "adventure" on us when we had two flats on the
pop-up camper within the 1st 100 miles. If you ask the kids about our trip
to Virginia, they mention the "flats" straight-off!
BTW, I changed them in record time....:coffee:.

Love the 80's Toyo trucks and runners. Nice rig.

Nice writeup! Bummer about the tires though! I get out to Oregon alot for work and always wished I had some time to do some exploring. I'm heading out to Govy next week, if you are up that way at all between the 27th and July 7th shoot me a line.

Thanks for sharing. Get's me in the mood to get out and go somewhere East of here. :sombrero:
Man it's amazing out there eh. Were going back in a few weeks and hopefully the weather will be a bit better and this will all turn out to be a "blessing in disguise"... Plus both Whitney AND I got some sort of mini-bronchitis and were both running fevers and had sore-throatsby the time we got back to town Friday night...

That said, I think we'll probably run the same route out to Prineville and finish the Ochoco Pass loop then down SE to Rome/Three-Forks for the Night then over to Christmas Valley and The Lost Forrest yadda yadda...

All I can say is I'm glad to get out of Portland whenever I can. It's my favorite "kind-of-big" city, if I've gotta live in one it's the best one for me IMO...BUT in reality I gotta move out to the country somewhere. I just don't like being in ANY city for too long anymore...

We should make an OR/ID/NV/N.Cal group run out to the Owyhee area, that would be aton of fun. By then I'll have new tires/Gears/And LSD's hopefully...

Cheers

Which part of the Owyhees and what's your intended route?

I like your Runner, nice and clean but also well-thought out.

Do they make Toyo ATs in a 33x10.5? I've only seen Toyos that size in the MT.

Well we're planning on heading towards the "Three-Forks" put in/camp near Rome OR. then planning on heading over to probably X-mas Valley and the "lost Forrest" the Owyhee was honestly just ONE of the places we were trying to go. As far as the Tires... DOn't know about the Toyo AT's, I didn't want them adn my crummy 31's got me home and NOW I have some BFG AT's in 33x10.50 that I love adn paid about 1/3 the price for... Now I just need to get my gearing/diffs done up and I'll be nearly done on the truck as far as drivetrain mods (like they're ever erally done eh ;) )

Cheers
