WELL!!!!!!!!!! We left...
But I will say from the get go here: We returned with our tail between our legs... And me, well I'm just sad
I will say though, the Toyota ran flawlessly. The little 22RE with 4.10's pulled up hills (yeah it was would up but hey...) at 60 even on the biggest grades, some I even held 70. It really made me feel like it was unstopable, although it was a bit top heavy, and needs new tires HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...
I kept thinking though about an old guy I met at a Phish show years ago. He said : "whatever you do man... don't lose your shoes man..." Read on to find out why a good pair of shoes can really make or break your experience
So we also took along our new traveling companion: THE MOOSE!!!!!
We made it to Prineville and to this AMAZING camp site outside of town near Stein's (or as it should be spelled Steen...) Pillar off Hwy 26 near Wildcat campground in Central/Eastern OR
Had some amazing tucka: Ramen, Corn, Pea's, and Terryaki chicken. with some Pacifico and Kokanee to wash it down
Then on the way out this morning, we randomly stoped for a view point and what do I hear...
HSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Oh crap. AND it's exactly as I suspected... I've got a flat. No doubt I got it turning around to get out of the spot we were in as there was alot of metal left from some pretty lame previous guests (we took alot but apprently not enough
eh )
Luckily I have multiple jacks, of various types, a good spare and my tool kit (yeah I know you'd assume I'd have that but belive me I've forgotten it before
)so on it went and back to Prineville and Les Schwabb.
Yeah I was getting a bit sick of it all right now...
Now what I didn't know at the time was how baddly I had punctured the tire. I looked, but I didn't really fiddle with it enough to get a sence of how shot it was. Well when they got it out adn cleaned, it was a y shaped three-corner tear (each length of the cut was about 1-1.5" each) that was not going to be repairable...
Now I've been needing new tires for awhile and frankly I was so ready to go on this trip that I about plunked down all the dough for new tires in my desired 33x9.5/10.5 but alas all they had were Toyo Open Country's in 33x10.5 and they were 235 a tire... Now I don't like the Toyo At's to begin with, but at 235 a tire I was really not having it. So the guy starts trying to talk me into some "32X12.50's, they'll go real nice on that truck. make it look tough and wider..." And here's the part where I stop him and then decide not to have a pohilosophical argument over his (IMO) rediculous advice... I was however able to pick out wich of the many 4wd's was his in the lot... The one with the 31X13.50 (or something) Thornturds... Oh and flames and chrome wheel flares... Interesting. I buy a 31x1.50 cheepie to get me home and maybe be a trailer spare in the future, but one thing's for certain... Now my Diffs and Tires will be getting addresses: 33x9.5/10.5 plus F/R LSD's here I come!!!!!!!!
It's about this time that another guy from the Schwabbe comes up and ask's me about my Marlin rear-bumper... Or as my GF calls it, I "pick up yet another guy" HAHAHAHAHAHA So we talk for awhile and turns out he's got an 85 Runner, Dual Cases, 4Link, 38's etc and another older 83 P/U that's built a little less extremely sitting on 36's with duals as well... So I've got a new wheeling buddy and a Crawler to take out in a few weeks when I head back out there... All in all not a complete loss.
So all of this leads to: Me coming home after night one. We've already got a plan to leave in 5 weeks on another attempt of the same trip. I thinkk actually it'll be nicere to go in the hot season as it was pretty stormy and the roads in and around the Owyhee are GNARLY when wet.
