Parking Brake stuck on!

I just went to pull out of my driveway and in the process of turning my parking brake off, it went click and twist, the handle spun all the way around and will not return back to the off position. I can retract it partially, however, beyond that it is stuck on. Its enough pressure on the brakes to prevent the truck from rolling, so I do not want to drive on it in this condition.

Any on know how to fix this??

I have checked it per page 9 on here: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-buchanan/93fsm/brakesystem/3checksan.pdf

Temporary fix:

Crawl underneath it and back the adjustment out until the brakes stop dragging....beyond that, I dunno....

Yes

YES I had the same problem, my brake locked up the same way. The truck wouldnt even move.
I ended up having to remove the left rear wheel, (the brake side that did not let go.)
I removed the brake drum to find that the brake shoe had worn a good bit and the shoes seemed to have gone out so far as to get hung up on the backing plate. It got hooked on an edge of the backing plate and could not retract with the spring only. This happened only in the cold and more than once.

I re-adjusted the the e-brake and checked all the sides front and rear. My front were worn a bit allowing the pedal to travel a bit further and the rear shoes were worn a bit but nothing that would warrant an issue such as this.
After the adjustment and new front pads. It has not happened agian.

I thought I had water in the cable for the e-brake and it was freezing up, but it was all good and hasnt given me an issue after i did the brake work.
im waiting to drive a bit and see if it happens agian.
It is a very weird issue and inconveniant.

I also bleed the system very well. I know that the park brake is cable actuated. But the hydralic system also determines the amount the pedel and shoes will travel.
The shoes seemed to have moved so far "out" that the spring in the drum could not bring them back in. Like I said I had a couple times were this happened and I have not found a for sure cause but bleeding and adjusting seemed to be the fix.
I only have 70,000 miles on my 06 and the brakes were not that worn.

OK loads of fun. A micky-mouse trail fix, cable got caught on the e-brake, causing it to stick on, on top of that while pulling the rear drums, i noticed a rear axle seal leak, and decided to replace it and the bearings on both sides while at it, in addition the passenger side shoes were metal on metal, and needed replacing. So basically a whole new part for everything the ebrake cable touches. LOL :victory:

Glad you found the problem.

Just a note on the bearings if you haven't done them yet: the bearing retainers have to be within a 2mm spec in order to have them seat on the seals correctly. There is a measurement from the face of the axle flange, I can look it up if you need it. Be absolutely sure you get the retainer in the correct location or you'll be pulling it all back apart again, not to mention replacing the new shoes again. You'll need to measure with a vernier caliper, and its tricky. I know a number of people that have dealt with this, me included.

There are two seals on Toyota axles. The outer is a dust seal. The inner is the oil seal and if you got an oil leak your wheel bearing is toast or soon will be since the oil washed the grease out of the bearing.

Probably the wheel bearing was bad and caused the leak.
