Patrol (coil) vs. Land Cruiser HD (HZJ 79)

Sinze the axles seem to be pretty much the same during the 90's and early 2000's, when did Nissan change the frame? Are all coil-frames the same? I like the older patril with the sharper edges, way cheaper too, (but weak enginenes of course) but they have often rust issues. Are they als 3.5mm thick? would give the rust some material to chew on. Older Land Rover defenders often have issues with rust an the frames, but they only got 2mm thickness...

Where did you hear about rust issues and weak engine? Most Patrol I've seen were rust free and had strong engine. They have a boxed frame which I prefer over C frame and the 4.2L diesel engine can rack up to 500,000 miles with only regular maintenance. I agree, the older GQ model looks better!

Well both the J-7 Series and the Patrol deal with rust over here, might be the climate. I know that the 90s 7-series had pretty much the same frame as today, so 3-4mm thick, which gives you some time, is it the same with the patrol?

The only frame based vehicle able to widthstand the rust for long is the g-wagon, since it got designed here with much better rust protection , but it's by far the most expensive and the old ones are very slow.

The J7 is often available with the 4.2 but very expensive, a good looking HZJ 75 from mid 90's will still be close to 15.000$

The patrol is much more common and because of that half the price. Sadly it never got the 4.2 over here, so you are stuck with the 2.8 in this era.

OK the 2.8 is a different beast, heard they had their share of troubles but they aren't commonly found here. And yes, pretty sure the boxed frame is 3mm thick. But we disgres!

One can't go wrong with either of these great trucks. They both remind me of stubborn mules! But treat them right and they'll carry your load to destination!

I know what I'm talking about (our last trip somewhere in France)...
;)

Ha :)

Yeah the 2.8 is not really a first choice engine, i ecall the 3.3 was better, but the older the more rust.

Have all boxed patrol frames used the thick 3.5mm pieces which had been Mentioned bei GEKO?

I know that the HD-J7 frame is pretty much the same from the 80's until today with just minor changings in the front when they switched to coil in front and a little more strenght when the V( ws introduced.

When and what changed on the nissan frame?

I believe he is referring to the 160-series Patrol or per-Y60/GQ's. That being 1980-87.

As far as the frame on those trucks. Extremely burly! I have cut one in half and there is a 3rd inner frame rail. These frame are super stout. But they have been known to tear leaf spring mounts.

I don't believe the Y60 frame is the same so the change came in 1988.

No no the old leaf-spring patrols are very rare again.

The first coil-spring patrol, the Y60, with the weak 2.8 Liter engine is the cheapest by far. If the frame and the axles of this are close or identical to the y61 frame, it might be worth looking for one, or maybe looking for a petrol verion (again very rare, but not expensive)

Very rare!? Very rare where!?

They are all very rare here in the US because none have been sold here since 1969.

Well rare in western Europe.

The 2.8 Diesel is quite common, but weak, maybe i can get the older 4.5 gas for a good price.

So are all frame from 88-2009 pretty much the same? (if they are coil, of course the leaf-rear-ones will be different).

Indeed a very good site, THX!

Something that crossed my mind concerning the Toyota - vs. Patrol Frame debate in this threat: What about the new big Toyota J200?

As far as i know the frame is based on the Tundra, but got boxed, so it might be much bigger than anything we talkd about so far, anyone had a chance to compare the meat?

The rear axle is pretty massive too, but i don#t know if it is as strong as the 266. The frot is a single suspension, which normally is weaker as a solid axle, but there are very sturdy IFS in the military and theat thing looks much stronger than most designs.
