Pentax K-7

I'm falling in love with this camera

any opinions? great price point, great features, great size, weather proof, real HD vid, weather proof lenses at affordable costs, half the price of the 7D

so far from what I read the service is good too

I have had this camera since November and I like it very much. The kit lenses are okay, but I would recommend getting some faster Pentax lenses from higher up the range. Otherwise a great camera. The 7D is undoubtedly a superior camera but for twice the price I would need to make my living as a photog and I do not.

How well does it do in low light?

Every review I read of Pentax cameras this is where they always suffer (I haven't read a review of the K-7)

I think the performance is fine in low light especially if using the fast Pentax lenses. It is more than capable of sharp indoor social photography without flash if using a lens of F2.8 or better. But I will say I always shoot in RAW under low light conditions. Low light JPEGs from the K-7 are not nearly as good because of the noise reduction used by Pentax.

thanks for sharing TCM!

I think the biggest 3 things that Pentax has over the 7D are size, weather resistance, and user cost as well as purchase cost

one is the weather durability. I question Canon's, but Pentax has an excellent rep for this. I will be using this among other things, as a field camera with a lot of back country hiking, a lot of winter mountaineering, etc

cost and size; who wants to risk losing a $1700 camera? plus the lenses for the Canon are much more expensive so the cost really grows. The size of the Pentax is much smaller, the 7D is huge by comparison imo

so I think for me, for my use, it really seems like a bargain

I hear great things about Pentax service as well :)

have any of you read about the 7D's exposure issues?

this is just my assessment after some fair research. You may find very different results :)

I bought the K-7 for the same reasons: the relatively small size, weather proofing and cost, plus I wanted in body image stabilization. Not to mention that Pentax has universally praised lenses at a reasonable cost. I have never regretted the purchase during my now six months with the camera. In my opinion the K-7 is in the leading group of all DSLRS with APS-C size sensors. Yes the 7D has better low light performance, but in all other categories that matter it is really not that much better. Only the pixel peepers can argue otherwise. The next step up is really to go with full frame DSLRS. They are better in every category, especially low light performance and depth of field control. If I ever decide to upgrade it will be straight to a full frame model and I am especially fond of the 5D MkII. It is also a very fine HD video camera.

Forget the body, if you get into a Pentax get into one for the lenses. Lenses are what you'll keep, use, and spend most of your money on. I've heard Pentax has some really nice lenses, especially their macro's, but keep in mind their product line isn't as developed as Nikon or Canon's. Check their lens lineup and make sure they have what you'll want/need for your style of shooting. Happy shopping!
