people keep wondering why jeep is not axing the good ole patriot? Heres why!

I was just looking at sales figures for various vehicles. So, I decided to look at patriot numbers. Quite surprising. Lets look at 2015 and we will compare renegade sales figures in the states...

Renegade for 2015 total units moved - 60,946
Patriot for 2015 total units moved - 118,464

The patriot is out selling the renegade this year by almost 10,000 units as well.

The stats I am looking at shows that there was decline in sales each year until the 6sp automatic replaced the horrid cvt trans...then they increased every year since. They should just do away with the CVT even in the FDII model....with the six speed, the difference is negligible for crawl ratio etc, and they could add the FDII goodies to it and have a much better all around rig.

They need every gas sipping pansy SUV model they can sell to offset the Wrangler and stay CAFE compliant. Every vehicle that they sell which is not a Wrangler, lets them sell more Wranglers.

Some people buy the badge and don't need off road credentials.

Same rings true for the person who buys a entry level Lexus, Infiniti, Mercedes or BMW.. It may be front wheel drive, built on a lesser chassis but it will have the badge/stigma all the same.

These people keep Jeep alive so they can make things WE want.

Yep. And this is exactly why the Wrangler, Cherokee and then Liberty all came with a 4 cylinder option for all those years. It got their CAFE numbers up just enough. As soon as they came out with the Patriot / Compass, they dropped the 4 cylinders from the rest of the lineup as it wasn't really helping them enough.

Thing is, Nothing in the patriots class is better off road. CRV? nope, RAV, NOPE, ROUGE, NOPE, anything else, NOPE. It still is a JEEP. No, its not a wrangler, but not everything needs to be. It still has JEEP bloodlines and it off roads quite nicely actually....Seeing as I owned 2 of them, the FDII in 2010 and 2015 FD1, the 2015 is MUCH MUCH better in every way.

I didn't mean to offend and I wasn't saying the Patriot is crap.. My intention was to defend Jeep's decision to keep it.

In fact I know more about a can of paint than the Patriot but what you say makes sense. Most people harp on and on about solid axles and articulation but a good 4wd system and traction control will make up for those things...

Without traction you wont go anywhere regardless of those other things. A Patriot with traction control would probably make its way further than an old Wrangler with open diffs and no traction control but that's just a guess.

I recently wheeled with a Renegade trailhawk and was very impressed with the capability. IMO it outperforms what most drivers would demand of any off roader.. I'd guess the same holds true with the Patriot.

EDIT.. I watched a couple videos of the Patriot and was impressed with what it could do.

The videos I watched it didn't make it pretty(lots of tire lifting) but got everywhere the other jeeps did(some heavily modified).

I've always thought that the Patriot represented an incredible value. We bought ours new (2012 FDII Latitude) for just over $20,000 without even negotiating hardly at all. I believe at the time it had also been picked as the lowest cost of ownership for small SUV segment by Edmunds (or something like that). We're still only at 40K miles, but zero repairs or problems.

I really think that all of the development and marketing efforts that Jeep put into the Cherokee and Renegade could have been put to better use on improvements to the Patriot.

Except that its a pretty lousy and small pavement machine. ;-)

Its fine on pavement for me. and its bigger than the renegade...one of my deciding factors as well. The patriot is a great all around vehicle. Check out Christophe's review. Sure there are better ON road cars....BUT who cares. those on road cars are made for pavement, not packing up and getting out into the backcountry and exploring....and def. not for the cost of the patriot. Hell, the patriots cost less than some motorcycles and many used rigs. With the new 6sp its much better on gas than previous versions with the CVT, and is quiet and comfortable. NO it wont do 100 mph all day long but any vehicle that will do 100 mph all day long will not touch the patriot off road (for the most part).

I put the Patriot in the same light SUVish ability as Subaru wagons and Rav4s before Toyota botched the RAV. Except the Patriot as you pointed out is cheap, and cheap for many reasons. But if it works for you thats OK
But that doesnt mean its a good vehicle. Lol. Lots if people liked the Aztec too.

Its much better than any rav, and better off road than Subaru too. Subaru may have more power on road but that's they only upside I see. I owned one. Reliablilty of the Subaru is crap compared to my 2 patriots I had. The patriot is "cheap" because they have models that leave out lazy person options like power windows, locks, and electronic gizmos. not because the vehicle is built like crap. There is a big difference.

I have bought two in the last three years. Daughter went to Anchorage for two years. AWD, no AC and crank windows. She loved the AWD in the snowy times. Liked the space to haul crap. Return to the lower 48 brought a convertible beetle. Lemon Lawed it out. Back to Patriot. This time all the bells and whistles. She again enjoys the utility, minor off road (there is a thread here "soft road" pretty well sums it up) Great fit for her as a 20 something. A little utility, a little comfort, and a little price. Hard to beat the total package for value / versatility. All good things.

BTW, if you go by the MK platform, it Jeep's best selling at ~70,000 unit year-to-date (4 months). The KL is second at 67,200 with the GC (65k) and Wrangler (60k) nipping at it's heels. If you lump the 500X with the Renegade (BU), you're still only at ~37,000.

For the record, there are many manufacturers that would love to have all their platforms >120k/year. Jeep is incredibly well positioned right now. The next 'Riot and Wrangler should continue the current trends. I expect both to be lighter, stiffer, more fuel efficient, and more capable. They're doing it "right by us" (by 'us', I mean Americans).
