Photographing the eclipse

I set my alarm to get up at 2am for this. Then I couldn't get back to sleep. I should have done some close up's of the moon but that wasn't the look I was going for. Almost all mine didn't turn out... I think it was the foggy brain of just waking up.. I am going to blame my bad photography on the hour....

But here is the only one I consider any good.

Little different approach.. I was trying to take advantage of the red moon more than the Eclipse itself.

Nice effect! How long of an exposure was this to get so much red to show up on the trees?

From Rusher's FLicker site:

Exif data
Camera Nikon D90
Exposure 30
Aperture f/2.8
Focal Length 16 mm
ISO Speed 1000
Flash No Flash
Date and Time (Modified) 2010:12:21 03:12:46
Exposure Program Manual

He'll have to tell you the source of the red light. Either ambient from neighborhood or maybe painted with a red LED light.

Honestly I think the red is from the moon.. It was a very red moon here a little after 2 am.

The neighbors house is 1/4 mile off or so and I don't think there lights would back light the trees like this espcially with a red color. There are red lights that direction(top of wind turbines) - 20 miles away that do create a glow when I try single exposure star trails 30+ minutes but not on a 30 sec exposure.

The only editing I did was to increase the highlights and shadows in google picasa.

Now I am curious if the red was created from the moon or a land base source - I will have to check it out tonight if the sky is clear.

I am going with something from the earth as it is off to the camera right, a lot more than the moon would be. Maybe a car passing and the taillights reflecting in the trees?

Great picture either way!

True I was thinking about the question and never mentioned the photo.

I may not be the best eclipse shot ever but who cares, the image is still very cool with all the star detail and the red tree. I like it.

Yep based on your input maybe a passing car's taillights? It does appear to be coming from camera right on this side of the tree. Maybe it was so late your eyes were glowing red?:Wow1:

Well we had hazy skies so some of the pictures got blurry, but it was still fun.
