Hey @Osmo79 - your sweet Vanagon is absolutely worthy as a follow up to others here. I like it a lot and have spent a lot of time wandering the Midwest and the California coast in the same kind of setup, though with no awning.

As for switching to a diff vehicle for south of the border or not, a lot of folks have taken their Vanagons and Westys down there with success. . .though no idea what finding parts or mechanics might be like these days. All part of the adventure, and, as the Quakers are fond of saying "Way will open. . . "

It'll all happen as it's supposed to. Love to see what you end up doing and where you go. Hope to run across you out there somewhere, someday.

Dry roads and open skies, Kim.

Not sure my little old van is worthy as a follow up to some of these amazing vans!

brianjwilson  that's one clean looking Sprinter!

As much as we want one, it looks like a Quigley Transit or NV may be the direction we go since we have plans to head south of the border for an extended period of time.

That's if we don't end up taking the VW. We've just started to camp in it so the jury is still out on how we will do as a family of four, for a year or more in the VW. Its hot, slow, leaks a little in the rain and I'm sure it will break down at some point, but its got that unspoken thing that just makes it cool to travel in.

At the end of the day, if my wife decides she wants more room, well... you know the saying....happy wife...

This is our 82 diesel Vanagon we picked up last year....Kim

@Tintman - that is one awesome rig and one very sweet interior. If you did all or most of that work yourself, you have some mad skills, mister. Very cool, clean, and efficient looking.

I came across this thread and thought I would share. I built this 97 E350 7.3 this spring. I have to say it was a ton of fun to build and it kept me busy for most of the first part of the year. We have been out on 6 trips this summer and it is perfect for where we like to go, It can get past the rough roads to get away from the busy spots around here in Utah, It can be a little big on old forest roads (we have had to cut some fallen trees out of the way). The only down side I have experienced is many people want to talk to you about it ;)

@sheep shagger,
Would love to see the van blasting through walls of water to help those in need!
Good to see your still on (sorta) high ground.

@Roaddude - thanks for the encouragement!

We really love the Vanagon, and think it is one of the greatest platforms out there for travel, just maybe not four a family of four for a year on the road. I know that there are others out there that have or are doing it so maybe we're being tempted by the whole trap of building something bigger, better, more luxurious, rather than just running what we have. There are so many options out there for expedition type vehicles and campers that you could analyze and research yourself in to oblivion. At the end of the day, I think we will come out ahead by just sticking with the Vanagon and doing a few mods rather than moving to another platform. -Kim

As someone who spent more than a few years working out of trucks just like that, I love how ambulance-y the interior and exterior still are. It's cool that you retained the airway seat, the medic shelf and the cabinets. I love the materials you chose for the inside as well.

Just because I'm putting some images together for a FS thread and feeling nostalgic! Recent shot of the van from roughly 13,000 feet!

I love the range that this thing has, 500 miles in and look how much fuel is left in the tank!

Easy 3 point turnaround on a wide spot in the road without a trailer.

Nice upgrade. I have a van similar to your old one and am already thinking of a box van. I'm over 4 wheeling, just to 4 wheel. I got that out of my system years ago. As cool as big 4wd vans are, I know that I don't NEED one. The one constant passion in my life is riding dirtbikes on sweet singletrack. My dream retirement would be to follow wet, moist dirt throughout the west, meeting new people to ride with. Now I need to start planning out a boxvan.:D
