Sr. Hackney, were your DRZ's of the S or E variety? I'm pondering the purchase of an E and making it street legal. A friend had one and it was a good bike.

I've had both at the same time of various vintages.

If you live in a state that has tough licensing requirements, such as CA, the S is much easier to deal with in that regard. CA checks the VIN number to see if the bike qualifies. Recent vintage Es do not.

We always stripped off everything we could from the S models, added an aftermarket shock, fork kit, etc. By the time we were done the S was still heavier than the E, but not by much. IIRC, we got one S down to within ~10lbs of a stock E.

I DS'd my XR400 here in TX. Wasn't too bad... just felt like a Latin American border crossing back and forth between different offices getting different copies of different papers....

How you earn respect:

Cecilia's tent of choice. She'd been in the campground a couple of weeks using a borrowed tent waiting on this replacement. Her original fell off the the bike on her last day prior to arrival at the campground. Her parents procured a new one and shipped it in from Switzerland. She would not settle for any other brand or model other than this one. She'd been using one all the way around the world and swore by its capabilities and durability.
