What are your opinions for using a Pintle Hitch for recovery. The one i have is rated for 15 tons.

just curious, i have recovery points up front but nothing out back except a hitch mount.

I don't have a problem using them. You are still going to be limited to the capacity of the receiver hitch. In general, most recovery forces are much lower than people think, especially if you get prep the site before ( ie digging, stacking, jacking, etc ).

The pintle hitch does seem to hang out and down more than most. If you are going to build your own hitch adapter I would keep this in mind. They do have a pretty round bottom shape generally so they slide off most stuff, but it is annoying to always be hitting something.

A pintle hitch is also good for use with a dogbone....

cool video.

i just finished building my receiver mount for the pintle hitch. i just need to go test it out. looks nice and beefy back there. i had to build a receiver mount because my tire carrier would hit a normal receiver mount. i just had to drop it down about 1/4".

i just need some new grade 8 bolts for it and its all done.

My only concern would be if a strap can work it's way up between the hook and the latch and escape. So long as you keep in mind that it is at least possible then I don't see a problem either. I've been thinking of doing the same thing.

my pintle hitch has a pin to keep the latch mechanism from opening. i'll take a picture and post it.

use a pintel hitch

I use a pintel hitch all the time and wouldn't think twice about using it with a strap.

Just be sure to use the "pin" which secuers the top piece down.
Go fer it!

Most do have that pin, others are like mine and have a latch that rotates horizontally. My concern stems from any slop that *might* be present that could allow a gap between the latch and the pin.

That gap really is the only failure mode that I see possible or even likely. So long as the pintle is looked at for that gap and found to be lacking, I see no problem with it.

there really isn't any gap. i can't even slide a piece of paper between both parts when its closed. its in really good shape.

The pintle on my Unimog has interlocking pieces so there is no way a strap can slide through but if you use a proper sized clevis than you won't have an issue under any circumstance as long as the pintle is locked with the pin.The weak link may be the frame mounted reciever if it isn't properly mounted and if the frame is weak from corrosion (rust).:coffee:

i have a factory class 5 receiver bolted to a rear subframe. the jeep is a 2006 commander. so the only rust is on the rear axle.
