Polling the experts on Disco XD

So this is the second time this issue has come up, and I want to hear the opinion of you, LR aficionados/experts. My XD has two American flags, one on each side. The one on the driver's side is backwards.
I purchased the truck two years ago, from my next-door neighbor (he was the original owner). As far as I can remember, the truck came this way from the factory.
Does anyone have an explanation for this?
(These are not the best pics to see the decals, I will take a couple better tomorrow and re-post)

Actually the ironic thing is that they are BOTH backwards. Proper etiquette for displaying the flag on a vehicle states the union (blue portion of star field) will always face towards the front. Think of it as creating the illusion that the flag is being flown and waving in the breeze.

That being said I do see the flag displayed improperly on a few cars and aircraft. It might sound nit picky, but usually I politely let the person know about it. Oh ya, nice XD by the way!

Thank you! Interesting point! I didn't know about this... I sent an email to ask the previous/original owner if the truck came this way from the factory... hopefully he'll get back to me and at least we'll be able to figure out if the Brits had anything to do with this... maybe it's some kind of "revenge" from them!:)

I also posted on your for sale thread, but please realize the '97s had the graphics applied by the dealerships- and sometimes even the owners as there were a couple different graphic packages offered. The '96s were official event trucks and prepped by LR.
And agree with the above post, I was taught the same concerning orientation. The weak link there being IF they were done incorrectly, say on a '96, from the supplier(in this case LR),then the historical importance would dictate replication. But not so much on the '97s as they were a bit helter skelter. Hope that makes some sense.

I got a reply from the original owner, and he confirms these decals came this way from the factory.

Of the XD's I've seen that one has the most decals applied, I'm guessing it was a dealer job. The flags give it a Camel Trophy vibe-even if they are on wrong-hey I guess in a mirror they look right!

I think it was a mix.

Some had them backwards:

Some didn't:

Some even had weird ones:

And this owner got ripped off:

So there you have it. You be the judge.

The flags are in the correct attitude when the rig is being towed to the shop behind a towtruck. :peepwall:

BTW: Nice looking rig

Quoting Nashvillerover here (from another thread that deviated into this same topic):

"I hate to call you guys out on this, but indeed the flags were applied at the factory facing the wrong way.
I often wondered about this, but was told that it had something to do with the same reason ambulance is spelled backwards on the front of an ambulance.

I have seen three of the true 96 event vehicles and in all three cases, the flags were as seen on this guys truck."

Haha, why didn't I think of that seeing as how my truck was towed last week. So AFSOC I'm assuming you're at Hurbie? How do you like the area? I grew up in Niceville, used to love off roading back on all the range areas.

Sometimes decals are put on backwards in order to allow the vehicle to point the right way in photographs (so if they post-process to mirror images, it doesn't LOOK backwards) if that makes any sense at all. You see it on race cars sometimes.
