Pop up Camper run

Looks like the weather is going to be on the warm side (upper 80's, low 90's) with a chance of some wind depending on where we are.

I don't have a radio. Can someone provide details regarding this meeting spot? Or send a private message with a cell # to contact if I get lost?

Is it an actual campground? State, federal, county? I'll be arriving fairly late due to work.

Thank you. Lori

Waltzing Matilda - I sent you a PM with some directions.

If anyone else wants to join us we are still meeting on the Harry Wade Exit Route today. 1.7 miles from Hwy 127 on BLM land. We'll head out tomorrow morning from there.

We will make it a point to camp on the Greenwater Valley Road off Hwy 178 Friday night in case anyone wants to join in late. Hwy 178 is just north of Shoshone. Check your road map for details. If you drive out Greenwater Valley Road for a couple of miles you will see our campers off to the right. Can't miss us.

Our plan is to have an enjoyable trip exploring the back roads of Death Valley in our popup campers. If you don't have 4x4 not to worry. No one gets left behind.

I'm too stupid to use a computer properly, can't figure out how to link the Mapquest page. Anyway, I used Owl Hole Springs Rd, Baker Ca to locate Harry Wade Rd, with some dead reckoning on the satellite image, it looks like the turn off road for camp is just past the mountain, before Harry Wade Rd bends back to the right. Hope that makes sense.

If you drive that 1.7 miles (approximately) on the Wade Road you'll see an obvious trail leading off to the left. I say approximately because my larger tires throws off my odometer slightly. If you turn up that trail about 100 feet you'll see a parking area with a rock fire ring. Close enough to the Harry Wade to be very visible for late arrivals to find. This area is big enough for our entourage.

The weather was great. The company was great. I'll try to get a couple of photos up soon. Just need to get caught up on some fire department stuff first.
I know Bob also took photos so he may have some to post.

We had a wonderful trip- good weather, new and interesting sights to see.

Cliff is very knowledgeable about Death valley and introduced the rest of us to new places. Rhyolite ghost town. Greenwater ruins. Old Mill ruins.

Unfortunately my little truck was literally broken in: I managed to break the frame at a suspension point. I guess that's what happens when we play with our toys...

Lori,

I didn't realize you took so many photos. Thanks for posting them. I'll get something up soon. Keep us posted on the truck repair. You did a great job maneuvering that little two-wheel drive truck where ever the big boys went. I estimate we drove about 80 miles off pavement.

I have many more, trying to figure out a better way to post them.

Thank you for a great introduction to that area! Ranges and basins indeed. I appreciated the views of dunes, dry lakes and ancient beaches while driving btwn Beatty and Baker.

And FYI the little museum in Beatty has great Information about Rhyolite and the gold mining history in general of the region. I spent an hour there Sunday exploring their displays. I saw a lot of items that matched the artifacts from green water. Kerosene cans, porcelain coated cookware, glass bottles etc. all intact instead of in bits and pieces.

I was there most of that week also, but not with the camper run unfortunately. We also went to the Mojave National Preserve.

Here's one of our remote camping spots, up from the valley:

And here's inside a lava tube within the Mojave National Preserve:

If your camera can GPS tag your photos, upload them to flickr and flickr will show where the picture was taken.

Bill thank you for the update. Great scenery and cave photo!

I had planned to spend time in the mojave preserve until I realized I needed to repair the truck. I even purchased an annual federal parks pass while in furnace creek so I could go to Joshua tree etc.it is good for any federal land that requires an entrance fee.

Oh well, it is valid for a year. I shall return!
