I've been reading up on TC's on flatbeds and and custom built campers on flatbeds for sometime now. I like the idea of adding toolboxes to allow for exterior storage. The stock bed of the pickup is not needed and is just added weight after you install your TC. Of course you need a floor but the sides of the truck bed become useless.
But the more I look at them and think about flatbeds, I'm thinking why use a flatbed at all? Build a subframe (if needed to raise the TC to clear the cab) to mount to the truck frame and mount the TC on it. Mount the toolboxes to the subframe or directly to the truck frame. I realize that a flatbed would be needed to support the floor of a custom built camper but it is not really needed for a standard TC. I am correct in thinking this?
I don't mean to highjack the thread but just want to get some thoughts on flatbeds in general.
