For thsoe using a Portable Buddy heater, and wanting to attach a fan, you don't have to hack into the base of the fan to make it hang on the grate. I rigged a hanger for mine as I was concerned slotting the base would reduce heat transfer and basically ruin the fan. Take a peek and let me know what you think.
